Hellebore

During these last few weeks of grey cold and wet weather I have been craving some colour for our garden. So we bought 2 pots of hellebore which are flowering.

I plan to plant them out in the back garden in a few days. They are supposed to be frost resistant but I thought I'd wait just in case we get another cold snap.

I looked them up and they were once used in witchcraft and the black variety are supposed to be poisonous.

There is a suggestion that Alexander the Great's death at 32 was caused by him taking an overdose of medication containing hellebore.

That and the fact that he was a pissant. I never knew hellebore (read up on your Robert Graves for it also does...) had such pretty flowers.

I've one outside too it has a pink touch to it though.

Lovely to have these. With luck they should in future years flower at Christmas - hence Christmas Rose. I have several Hellebores in my garden, but not a white one. Most of mine are rather dark - lovely when the sun shines through the petals. They really are frost hardy, and at the moment the stem buds are about three inches long and the buds starting to unfold. (Pictures to come quite soon)
