Please enlarge! 3" @ F8. 200mm Taken approximately 40 miles from this magnificent volcano. Pretty tight in camera crop to avoid views of the 'urban landscape'!
Taken 12/31/07. We don't get many clear days in the winter where this mountain can be seen like this!

View in Early Fall 2006, in dramatically different light. Amazing to see the differences with and without snow on it! Better enlarged.

Mount Rainier is an active[1] stratovolcano in Pierce County, Washington, located 54 miles (87 km) southeast of Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and Cascade Volcanic Arc at 14,411 feet (4,392 m). The mountain and the surrounding area are protected within Mount Rainier National Park. With 26 major glaciers, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states with 35 square miles (91 km²) of permanent snowfields and glaciers. The summit is topped by two volcanic craters, each over 1,000 feet (300 m) in diameter with the larger east crater overlapping the west crater. Geothermal heat from the volcano keeps areas of both crater rims free of snow and ice, and has formed an extensive network of glacier caves within the ice-filled craters. A small crater lake, the highest in North America, occupies the lowest portion of the west crater below more than 160 feet (50 m) of ice and is accessible only via the caves.

LocationMount Rainier was originally known as Talol, or Tahoma, from the Lushootseed word təqʷúʔbəʔ ("mother of waters") spoken by the Puyallup. It has a topographic prominence of 13,210 feet (4,026 m), greater than that of K2. It is a prominent feature of the southern landscape in most of the Seattle metropolitan area. On clear days, it can also be seen from as far away as Portland, Oregon, and Victoria, British Columbia. Because of its scenic dominance, Seattle-Tacoma-area residents often refer to it simply as "the Mountain."

mrutherford22 I love the winter shot of Mt Rainier! I used to travel a lot to Seattle/Tacoma and could never ever get a great shot (maybe because I was taking it from a moving car with a camera phone). You are so lucky to have this backdrop to shoot with. Hope you had a great New Year!

youlookmahvelous These are wonderful, I love to see the differences from season to season, though you don't get a lot of clear days, yours has to be the greenest. Since green is my favorite color you win. The oranges and browns in the second give it a totally different mood, just beautiful.

DancingDolphin Great shots.... I saw it a 'little' once.... one one of those not so clear days! Nice contrast in the two shots, I glad you posted them both!

Both shots are sublime.

soldotnamanda These are awesome shots. I remember when I lived in Seattle, driving down I-5 seeing Mt. Rainier dwarfing the sky. Sometimes I would be so preoccupied looking at it I would forget that I was driving. Yikes. You've captured it so well!
soldotnamanda · 2008-01-02: 17:33
Estel The first shot is fab. I really like the blue tone...looks very cold.
Estel · 2008-01-02: 17:35
lexlevans what a beautiful mountain!! #1 has such great blues, and the lighting in #2 is fantastic! totally looks like a painting - like something one of the artists from the Hudson River School would do.
lexlevans · 2008-01-02: 18:24
