Polar Bear Club!

2008.01.02
Per usual ... all of these are better enlarged!

These were all taken yesterday near the small town of Ashford, WA just outside of Mt. Rainier National Park. If you haven't visited Heidi's blog, please be sure to check it out here.. She got some great images of the kids and dogs, as well as some stunning landscape shots that she's holding off (at my suggestion!) until her next post. I may be somewhat biased, but they really turned out very, very well. Be sure to check them out if you haven't!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, the only thing more difficult for me than coming up with a photo to post is coming up with a Title! Anyone else struggle mightily in this department?!

I learned a valuable lesson yesterday with regards to new gear. Don't leave home without the manual! I somehow got my camera into a 9 shot bracketing mode and the exposures, obviously, were wildly varying as expected. Unfortunately, not realizing how I got into it, I was unable to get out of it! Needless to say, I lost several exposures due to the wide variance in exposure! Let that be a lesson to you! =)

No, unlike my title suggests, I did NOT join any kind of Polar Bear Club by jumping into any of these icy rivers wearing only my Speedo! =) Not that I have one, mind you ...

eljapa #1 and #5 are great, :-)) The 9 shot bracketing mode gives you a great change to practise some HDR:-)
Really miss bracketing on my cam..

Lumierenatural · 2008-01-02: 15:34
haushinka love the way you captured the water motion. great!
haushinka · 2008-01-02: 15:42
DancingDolphin WHAT.... you don't have a Speedo, and you didn't jump into the water?!?! Sorry but I believe that means you do not qualify for any polar bear clubs! YES, I have a TERRIBLE time with titles!!!!! Nice shots by the way! :-) OH.. and also btw.... that's my sister in your first comment (mowestlan), she started blogging today!

aknor Great shots, Mat, love the snow capped rocks in the river...you really captured a serene feeling in these photos. Title...yes, they are tough and I have to admit when I saw Polar Bear Club I was looking for some shivering, soaking wet nut cases!!!
aknor · 2008-01-02: 17:28
soldotnamanda You've got the water down! How can these look so warm . . . and yet so cold? The tones - everything, beautiful!
soldotnamanda · 2008-01-02: 17:31
lexlevans these are fabulous! i love the 'snow hats' that the rocks are wearing! i love #2 with the river taking my eye all the way up the photo. can't wait to see heidi's tomorrow!

and yes, i struggle SO badly with titles. but i think you did a great job with this one - sometimes you just gotta pull a little humor when you can't think of anything else!!
lexlevans · 2008-01-02: 18:28
signsnwonders I have always liked the look of running water against snow..you captured the feeling wonderfully!
Titles are my nemesis..I am thinking of calling them all either 'snow' or 'not snow'.
signsnwonders · 2008-01-02: 19:07
Lindyart love the angles in these and the light.. the last one particually stood out.. but 3 i s my favorite .. beautiful poetic winter pics:)

youlookmahvelous Gorgeous series, the last shot has been added into my faves, your shutter speed was perfect, love the flow and continuity.
youlookmahvelous · 2008-01-02: 20:26
mybigbackyard Beautiful, frigid photos! Glad to hear you didn't attempt to swim - you surely would have ended up in the ER!
mybigbackyard · 2008-01-02: 20:30
photopoet The water effects are stunning. I'm always stunned with the 'polar bear' groups that take a dip in frigid waters.
photopoet · 2008-01-02: 21:11
bettyluvsduncan Great shots! Numbers 2 & 3 are my favorites. It was beautiful in person, but even more so in your pictures. You have a way of capturing images of nature. Especially water. Maybe someday I'll be half as good as you. : )
bettyluvsduncan · 2008-01-02: 21:51

Lynda · 2008-01-03: 06:12
dkelly these are beauties all front pagers !
thats funny about not having the manual, same thing happened to me while out shooting in NC !
happy new year !

dkelly · 2008-01-03: 08:49
tbranscum Great set, love water!
tbranscum · 2008-01-03: 10:17
Madoc Very beautiful, Matt.
I must have been kind of hard not to overexpose the snow in these long expositions. Multi-exposure is the only way to get it right, I think...
The result is spectacular.
My fav is the last.
Madoc · 2008-01-03: 10:23
mattandbranson I really love #5! Fun to see your famous water shots with the snow caps! =)
mattandbranson · 2008-01-04: 15:23
TamaraHarden Well, if you every DO get a wild hair, and want to jump into the icy waters wearing only your speedo, I hope Heidi has her camera ready!!
