My dad actually stated he "wasn't having ANY fun"! Somehow, I think his grin says otherwise! ;)

Yep, no fun here!

My brother with another denizen from the creek!

And to prove the I WAS there, and can actually catch a fish too ... =). Check out the size of the net!

This morning. The air temperature was in the mid 20s ... the wind chill dropped it down into the single digits, I'm sure, and while this isn't cold for the likes of 'aknor', this was downright nippy!

Enlarge to see the snow flying!

My dad with a Wooley Bugger in his mouth!

River Pig!

A GORGEOUS Hen! Check out the gill plates, the spots, the white tipped fins. Fantastic!

Hey all!

For my dad's birthday in December, I gave him a weekend away with his two boys flyfishing an Eastern Washington Spring Creek. The only prerequisites were that we had to wait until the Seahawks were out of the playoffs, and the local mountain weather wouldn't be too hairy. This past weekend fit the bill!

The creek holds copius amounts of Rainbow trout that grow to mammoth proportions. We had an absolute BLAST! As you can see, the weather conditions were cold and snowy, but the weather did nothing to dampen our spirits, or negatively impact the fishing!

The creek bubbles out of the ground (created by the Grand Coulee dam on the Columbia River) and flows at a very constant 50 degrees and fluctuates only a couple of degrees all year long. Our thermometer showed 49.5F during this trip. In case you wonder about such things, 50F is ideal for trout!

As I mentioned before the weekend, I practice what I like to refer to as CPR. Catch PHOTO Release! As the "Release" is truly the most important aspect of CPR, the shots can be a bit hurried so the fish's impact out of water is kept to an absolute minimum. Composition often goes right out the window as you can tell in many of these shots. But alas, I was really playing "Flyfisher" this weekend instead of "Photographer". =)

I'm so blessed that my dad is still ready, willing and able to spend time with his kids! We had a phenomenal time catching fish, joking and laughing, and just plain ol' having fun. I trust when I'm my dad's age, my kids will want to give me such a get-a-way for MY birthday!

Happy Birthday, Dad. I love you.

Mat

lexlevans awe - this is such a great post! you all look like you're having such a blast! and what beautiful fish! and you resemble brett favre in #8, haha (i'm super sad the packers lost last night...). i love the ones of your dad - they make me smile! the fish in #9 looks a little cold... he's looking down longingly at the water saying 'come on, mat, take the bleeping photo and let me get back to the river!' ut oh, now i have that song 'take me to the river' in my head - you know the one the rubber mounted wall fish sings - i think his name is Billy Bass... cracks me up.
lexlevans · 2008-01-21: 10:54

dweiskir Those are some MONSTER rainbows. The biggest I've ever caught was just under 20". I don't know what I would do with one of those on my line. Beautiful shots. Now I really have the bug.

bettyluvsduncan I like all of these shots. Numbers 5 & 7 are my faves. I like the fact that its snowing in #5 and the action of Deej playing the fish. But #7 is very special. The look of concentration on your dad's face plus the wooly bugger in his mouth is priceless! I'm so glad that you got to spend time with your dad and brother doing what you enjoy most and making memories. Don't ever take it for granted.
