Seattle: The Emerald City

2008.02.24
A view of the Seattle city scape from along the pier - somewhere near Pier 67.

For Lex! Another view from the pier. I liked the way all of these high rise buildings and condo's are packed in as they are, although I can't fathom how people could live in such a place!

A view from atop the Space Needle, looking due south.

Hey wait ... is that soldotnamanda and yellowperil about ready to land on Lake Union?!

One of the many ferries that cross Puget Sound.

I liked the way the shadow of the Space Needle can be seen below. If you enlarge, you can barely see sailboats cruising on Lake Union below. Looking Northeast from atop the Space Needle.

This is a cool building that sits due North of the Space Needle and sits at the top of Queen Anne Hill.

=================================================
This was one INCREDIBLE weekend in and around Seattle, WA. The weather was absolutely stunning and Spring like! Heidi and I took the kids and spent "Caturday" with my brother's family hanging around the Seattle Center. We ate an expensive (and very small!) lunch on the waterfront, went up the Space Needle and had a wonderful time.

This wasn't a photo-specific excursion. I did manage a few decent shots of my brother's family, and a couple of decent cityscape shots. Perhaps I'll post some of the family portraits over the next couple of days. I did, however, find this architectural type of shooting very difficult for me! Perhaps I was too far out of my element, or perhaps I just didn't feel I had the leeway to look for 'the shot'. Whatever it was, I was somewhat disappointed in the vast majority of the shots I took over the weekend. Of course, I was actually pleased with my Lunar Eclipse post, so perhaps anything would be somewhat of a letdown!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I know I certainly did!

Mat

veganess Yes, I can't wait to see the family portraits!! I rarely see Kyler, he is growning up so fast. You're right, looking at those condos gives one a bit of a feeling of claustrophobia!! Beautiful pics of the city, glad the weather was cooperative for all of you.

focussed This is a wonderful departure from your usual work Mat.......Not that your other work isnt wonderful, but its always nice to see another side of you.
I love 2 because it has so much depth and so many layers. Also love the snow capped mountins trying to hide away in the back in #5.
Sounds like a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.....and family photos would be great!!!!!

soldotnamanda Yeah ... good weather in Seattle! It looks TERRIFIC! I'm so jealous. You made Seattle look even better than real life. These are awesome, and I'm so glad you had a great weekend.

Peche I'll agree with Andrea - the depth of field in #2 is wonderful, as is the framing of the shot.
I really like this set :)
I also love the title of this set - I keep thinking of the Wizard of Oz! lol
"We're off to see the Wizard..." lol

lexlevans #2 ROCKS!!! and i was goggling over it even before i saw it was for me :-) I can fathom living there!!! one of those places along the waterfront would be perfect! great capture of the city, i like to see how other skylines compare to mine (although i'm always a little partial to mine!). i like that black building with the curve in the side and i totally thought the same things about 'hey, is that soldotnamadance??' when i saw that plane. haha. i'm sure your weather was warmer, but we had sun and warmer temps this weekend too and it felt fabulous! although when i say warmer i only mean mid-30's... hehe. nasty here today, a winter storm is rolling in - yikes!!

great city shots - i'm always a fan :-)
lexlevans · 2008-02-25: 09:23
dkelly what a view from that space needle ! i love #1 # 3 and #6, nice to see you shooting out of the box ( so to speak ) i love the depth and wideness of these.

i bet these would look amazing in b/w as well.
dkelly · 2008-02-25: 09:46
Madoc Some truly outstanding cityscape shots here, Mat!
You might be a little disapointed (especially after your wonderful eclipse post...) but this is still really strong work.
Especially on #1, 2 & 7.
Seattle seems to be a bigger city that I thought.
Very nice work, my friend.
Madoc · 2008-02-25: 09:47

bamommy Mat These shots are fantastic. But you always take fantastic photos. Thanks for sharing. All of them are my favorites. Can't choose one. Take care
bamommy · 2008-02-25: 18:35
picturemom I think they are great shots! I agree with Queen, really like postcards. They are very well done- I really liked numbers 2 and 3, but as I took a 2nd look all I could think was too many houses, too many people!!Let me see those beautiful woods, some ugly fish and a beautiful stream (laughing).
picturemom · 2008-02-25: 18:52
melissacell I really like the first picture.
melissacell · 2008-02-25: 22:14

mrutherford22 Mat, I think these are great! I know how you can feel though when you aren't in "the zone" or you can't find "THAT shot". But you pulled it off flawlessly! A beautiful set of Seattle...looking forward to those family shots!
mrutherford22 · 2008-02-26: 21:09
SheriJ WOW so cool!! Love the plane coming in! I don't have a clue how people could live in such a cramped space either!! I look out my front door and all I have is spce and deer!!
