Montana Flyfishing?!

2008.04.14
What is this stuff?! I have no idea, but I liked it! =)

Again, this is NOT a crop (see I cut off the tips of the Mayfly's tail). I was lying down on the rocks to get this snap. Heidi has a shot of me from the trip lying down prone in the snow to take a shot ... I may just have to make that my new profile pic!

Some of my favorite trees.

Okay, so as I mentioned yesterday, the fishing wasn't as good as year's past due to myriad reasons. In an effort to gain something out of the trip, I found myself shooting many more unusual things than I would typically shoot on a flyfishing 'only' excursion to the Rockies. I didn't take nearly as many shots as I'd hoped ... and I wasn't able to cross as many off my list as I'd hoped ... but still managed to get some stuff that was unique, interesting (to me anyway!) and blog worthy! We did catch many fish, and I will share some of these with you in due time. =)

One afternoon, I found myself looking at some orange colored 'fungi' of some sorts. Now, Heidi simply cannot understand my fascination with all forms of fungi. She takes pics of weeds ... I take pics of fungus. What can I say ... I'm just wierd that way. Or is it I'm just wierd period?!

Along these same rocks, were some odd looking plants that I too thought were cool. They appear to be mosses of some sort, but I thought they were cool (no one else in my group understood why in the heck I was taking pics of orange fungus and odd mosses) and for some reason, I feel the need to share my oddities!

Given the nice responses to the Mayfly shots of yesterday, I thought I'd include a couple more. These are not crops. I was lying down in the rocks, camera steadied on the rock (since I didn't lug my tripod out to the stream) to get these shots. There was enough light to stop my lens down to F16 (on the 2nd shot) and still hold the camera steady enough sans pod to get a sharp shot.

And lastly a couple of other odd 'flyfishing' shots - the equine and the hawk! Now hawks are very prevalent along the farmlands of and grassy hillsides of Western, MT, as are horses. Given my recent desire and inability to capture each locally, given the opportunity I had to snap a shot or two of each. Nothing particularly special about either one, but they seemed to fit my eclectic mix of shots in this post, and thus made the short list.

Mat

aknor How can you not love fungus...the color, texture and hardiness of it??? I like the shots! Those Mayflies are beautiful, too!!
aknor · 2008-04-15: 00:53
veganess Well, whatever those were in the first 4 shots, I've decided I wouldn't like to trek around on them barefooted. That horse is pretty cute, just staring at you!!
veganess · 2008-04-15: 00:58
basisimages Good shots - looks to me like you had a nice time!

vterezia so very beautiful shots!
vterezia · 2008-04-15: 05:23
ncshutterbug Another great set, Mat! I love all of them, and am still amazed at the mayfly shots. How close were you? My luck, I'd get myself flat on the ground, all set up, and then it would fly away.

The first shot is orange lichen. Googling tells me that the official name is Caloplaca. I love lichen, fungi and moss. They're so tiny, yet so complex. Zdenula is another photoblog member who has some fantastic photos the stuff (as well as other wonderful nature shots). She has several recent posts in that category.
ncshutterbug · 2008-04-15: 06:08
kangshung I like the dof work in the first four, but my favourite is #8 - this is a great shot!
kangshung · 2008-04-15: 06:54
dhulsmeyer is it a lichen? not much of a nature boy but i think that's what it is. i like that bird on the fence post.
dhulsmeyer · 2008-04-15: 06:58

TheCrazyCroat Lovely post Mat! So many different interesting and unique thing. You are the man shooting at f16 hand held. WOW!

What kind of trees are in #8? The blue sky against the white bark is the perfect contrast.

I'm so happy you are home. Things are not the same here when you are not around.
TheCrazyCroat · 2008-04-15: 10:26

lexlevans hellooooo!
i'm a fan of the fungi - such cool colors and textures! and i'm not a huge horse person, but wow that horse is gorgeous! great shot!
ewwww, mayflies are so gross! haha. all i can think of when i look at them is the crunching sound they make when i'd walk across the grocery store parking lot under the lights and cross over a sea of them... :-)
sorry to hear that the fly fishing wasn't ideal - but looks like a cool place to be regardless!
hope you are doing well!
lexlevans · 2008-04-15: 14:43
SorinM Laying down and taking pictures--this is the image of a passionate image hunter... Many beautiful shots, but yes, no 7 is awesome!

mowestlan Gor-gee-ous! I totally love the horse's expression--"Hey, huh? What? Oh--okay." As for the bug you affectionately call a Mayfly, I call a BetterNotFlyIntoMyAirSpace. Welcome home--thanks for sharing these great pics!
mowestlan · 2008-04-15: 18:17
vollenda I think they are cool. I really like the fuzzy green stuff. :)

The hawk is a great composition. I really like the fence and the snow covered ground.

And the horse whiskers are sharp and wonderful, what a look. :)
vollenda · 2008-04-15: 21:27
DancingDolphin REALLY nice set. The birch trees are my favorites. We have them in northern Michigan where the cottage is. It's a favorite saying when people leave in the fall to say farewell by saying, "see you again, under the birches". :-)
DancingDolphin · 2008-04-15: 21:53
gillas3 Hi . So good shots . Thanks for sharing .
gillas3 · 2008-04-16: 08:48

Peche Wow, wow, wow, wow... and WOW!!
Sheeeeesh, those mayfly shots are awesome!! :D You were right that I would like them. Fantastic work!
The detail you've got in those shots is unbelievable. Was it sitting on a rock just posing for you or something? :P hehe
I do really love the dof and light in the first... and I have no idea what it is either, but it's really pretty :)
