Wedding Photography 101: Dave & Angie Hinshaw

2008.04.16

My boys! Trying to act cool!

These 2 adorable little girls got a LOT of our attention!

The cake topper cracked me up! Ball and chain ... and she holds the only key! =)

Look at the determination by this candle lighter! Nothing, and I mean NOTHING was going to put out that flame!

Originally, there was only supposed to be 1 flower girl. She had some 'issues' though and decided she wasn't going to be a flower girl unless she could be accompanied by her sis! They made for some adorable flower girls though! I liked the rose pedal being dropped and caught in mid air ...

The KISS! Of course ... as I state below ... you're NEVER in the right place! Heidi and I framed this shot as a gift though ... with an oval matte and a great frame. It does look quite nice framed, even if I do say so myself.

Their recessional was "I feel good" by James Brown. Now ... THAT's a FUN way to exit the ceremony!

You can see everyone having a blast ... perhaps because it was over?! =) Nah ... the recessional was just too fun!

The bride hugging her new Father-in-law.

ADORABLE I say!

She warmed up to me ... and certainly didn't mind having her picture taken, even if she was a bit timid to walk down the aisle by herself!

Now ... this is what I call 'capturing the moment'! This is the bride to a T! Always goofing off!!!

I just really liked the details of the back of her hair. So ...I snapped!

Look at my nephew on the far right! If he isn't just like my brother! Of course, my son in the red tie ... some have referred to him as 'minnie me' since he's essentially a spitten image of me! And of course ... there are the 2 adorable little angels again!

This reminds us a little of a Victorian era shot!

Ah the fun of decorating 'the pickle'. Dave has ALWAYS named his vehicles, and this one is without exception!

Imagine this shot turned slightly to accentuate the heart ... and matted in a square matte. We also gave them this shot as a gift.

Can you tell I couldn't get enough of this cutie?

Woohoo!!!!

Congratulations Dave and Angie!

First of all, before the photoblog police arrest me for posting 30 pics in one post, let me state that these are being shared with family and friends whom were unable to attend the ceremony ... so go back and arrest somebody else! =)

Now onto the matter at hand ...

What I learned about wedding photography, by a wildlife shooter:

Expect chaos!
Expect terrible (HORRIBLE!!!) Mixed Lighting!
Expect High ISOs!
Your glass will NEVER be fast enough! (Speed costs money ... how fast do you want to go?!)
Expect to NEVER be in the right spot at the right time!
You'll invariably have the WRONG lens attached to the camera at the RIGHT time!
Shoot formal pics BEFORE the Ceremony!
Expect to go hungry!
Expect distracting backgrounds!
Expect not ALL grooms want to have their picture taken!
Expect to be EXHAUSTED post wedding!

I could probably go on and on from this 1 experience, but alas, I will not bore you with all of the lessons learned!

In total, Heidi and I shot about 700 images over the 4-5 hour period and these are 30 that turned out so-so. (which also means to expect a TON of editing work!) The bride is a huge fan of sepia toned images, hence many of these in sepia.

Overall though, it was a fantastic experience, and I cannot wait for our next wedding forthcoming in June of '08. It will be at a completely different and hip venue (which we've already scoped out) and should provide MANY fantastic images ... at least that is the hope!

Mat

pattyb Nicely done, I really like the shot of the rings! ; )
pattyb · 2008-04-16: 22:48
dkelly you did a nice job with shooting this. looks like a lot of work !
#17 and #18 i like the noise, gives it a vintage feel .

#26 has amazing clarity, sharpness. i'm sure the bride will love that one !

i've done hair for many weddings ... needless to say, boy i know about the chaos, horrible lighting, not eating, and a few other challenges involved with " working " a wedding . ( yuk )

don't think i'd do it for a living, although i am finding as of late that i am rather good at getting people to connect with me and my camera. think i'll stick with my "artsy fartsy " portraiture.
LOL

dhulsmeyer you did a really nice job with these. i would be petrified to take someone's wedding photos. too many people seem to take the wedding so much more serious than the marriage, which bothers me.
dhulsmeyer · 2008-04-16: 23:25
TheCrazyCroat If this was my wedding I'd be THRILLED. I surely hope this couple is. You made so many of the shots classy, with an artistic touch and flair. Like I said they should be thrilled!
TheCrazyCroat · 2008-04-16: 23:30
amyschmamey These are wonderful shots! I love the sepia, I normally am not a fan, but you made it look wonderful. I love your wedding rings shot. Wonderful. Someday I hope to shoot a wedding and I will remember all of your words of wisdom on what you learned about wedding photography! lol. Good job.
amyschmamey · 2008-04-16: 23:33
TamaraHarden Mat, you guys did a beautiful job!! And thank you for posting all 30 of these!!. You're right, my parents keep asking, so I will forward this on to them. It was great seeing people in these, that I haven't seen in ages. I absolutely LOVE the kiss picture, and I can imagine it all done up and framed. What a great picture to hang in your living room. Great, great pics.
TamaraHarden · 2008-04-16: 23:58
Bob Johnson Mat, I like your work, the pictures are wonderful. Dave and his new bride Angie look very happy. I can now put a face to the name of Angie. It was good to see so many I have not seen in along time. Again Great job. Uncle Bob

Askrubies really nice job.
Askrubies · 2008-04-17: 00:47
FirstBlush Yeah, I won't do weddings again. The lighting is ALWAYS horrible. Even with Tara's I had to adjust because I just could NOT get the right white balance in that place. You did a great job, though!! And yeah, the stress of capturing every moment is just AHHH!
FirstBlush · 2008-04-17: 01:15
Mprzy 1# is perfect

majikmonkee Great job! I especially like #26, very powerful composition! You've done really well, here, and it sounds like you've learned a lot from it. I have to give you credit here, I'd never want to do this myself, no matter how much I improve! =P
majikmonkee · 2008-04-17: 07:39
DancingDolphin I think you did well for your first time! This was actually quite funny to read! Sorry to hear it wasn't fun for you! Have you compared notes with Madoc? He recently did a wedding also. I'm sure there's a huge learning curve with weddings just like any 'other' photography... you'll work it out!
DancingDolphin · 2008-04-17: 08:05
dweiskir Very, very cool work Mat. I'm shooting a wedding this Saturday and you've given me a couple of ideas for variations on shots I already had planned. It's also very cool that you and Heidi shoot together. It's wonderful that you have a shared love of two great hobbies.
dweiskir · 2008-04-17: 08:39
mattandbranson First of all I totally dig that cake topper! Toooo funny! LOL!

I bet you are relieved to have your first wedding shoot accomplished! I would love to shoot a wedding, but the thought of it is SO overwhelming! You have some wonderful shots here! I am sure the next wedding will be even better now that you have learned so much about what to expect, and I love that you share your lessons with us too! =)
mattandbranson · 2008-04-17: 09:17
tbranscum Wow, these are great! I love the one with them kissing! You do a great job! I am with Dennis that it is great that you and Heidi share your photography.
tbranscum · 2008-04-17: 09:59
etodd80 Wow, great first wedding shoot! Thanks for all the lessons and tips, makes me definitely want to stick to landscapes and sports! Did you each have a couple different cameras with different glass for different circumstances? It all sounds quite stressful! I don't think I could do it.

You two did a great job though. The kiss shot is perfect, the ring shot, lots of them are great. Congrats on your first one down!
etodd80 · 2008-04-17: 10:57
Beagles3 You did a really nice job on the wedding photos. The couple should be very pleased with the results!

Weddings are tough for all that work them! I have catered weddings, done all the floral decorations and bouquets and build the huge multi-layered cakes. Each one has had its little glitches and hiccups. Tired is the word at the end of the day!

I commend you for taking on a daunting task of photography of a special day! Nice work!
Beagles3 · 2008-04-17: 12:08
maudlaurens For me , for me, formidable !!!! Belles photos d'un jour heureux !

Queen911 I was disappointed there were not more. Wow -Your first time!!! You guys did a fantastice job. Very creative, and very fresh from the common very wedding picture. I'm so impressed.
Queen911 · 2008-04-17: 17:13
ncshutterbug Very, very nice set. They'll love it! I especially love #11 and #22 (love the detail of color in the rose).

I love the picture of your boys as well! My stepson used to have hair like that. He's 6'7", and we used to joke that his hair added another two inches. Then one day he shocked us by showing up with a shaved head!
ncshutterbug · 2008-04-17: 18:58
LotoFoto I think you did a great job!
Some of these shots are absolutely amazing!
How wonderful!
LotoFoto · 2008-04-17: 20:38
mowestlan Great work, Mat! The one of the two girls walking toward you is so cute--very fun day. Their recessional--will make note of that one!
mowestlan · 2008-04-17: 20:53
mrutherford22 Exceptional!!! WELL DONE!!! These are just beautiful. You and Heidi did an awesome job. And the Wedding Photog 101 lesson was very helpful! :) My favorite is the shot of the rings in the bible. The words reflecting on the gold is simply amazing. Wonderful, wonderful job!
mrutherford22 · 2008-04-17: 21:08
emmetan very nice no 26 is great
emmetan · 2008-04-17: 22:09
bamommy What a fabulous job! Looks to me like you captured every element of the wedding perfectly. But most importantly you truly captured the love between the happy couple. Nice work Mat
bamommy · 2008-04-18: 02:16
SheriJ Wonderful!! #11,26,27 are SUPER!!!
SheriJ · 2008-04-18: 13:32
Madoc I have no choice but to agree that the room in wich the celebration took place is not the most «photogenic».......
But you certainly did good -hard, I presume- work to capture the beauty in the people that were there.
Many creative takes here, particularly #22 & 23.
Many great details shots too.
Many nicely caught moments too, as on #19 & 21.
Very good job, my friend.
Can't wait to see what you'll come up with the next time.
Madoc · 2008-04-19: 17:10
vollenda There are photoblog police?

Great work, Mat! You caught some wonderful moments and some great details like the rings and the cute cake topper. I'm sure they loved them.

At least you had some lighting! The 2nd wedding I did was at night, outdoors, with almost no lighting. I thought I was going to fry my flash. :)
vollenda · 2008-04-20: 23:11
picturemom Great great job, congrats to you and Heidi, congrats to the couple!
picturemom · 2008-04-28: 20:09
janeE Congratulations on surviving your first wedding! You captured the day for the new couple so well. I would list my favorites, but there's too many! I did add #26 to my favs. Great clarity & just beautiful depth. Awesome job!
