Mother "Goose", Conservative "Hawks" & "Bleeding Heart" Liberals

2008.04.21

Bleeding Heart (liberal)

Mother Goose! I liked her downy feathers stuck to the branch, and the resulting DOF by focusing on the feathers.

Cooper's (Conservative) Hawk! Look at that wonderful gleam in its eye after catching its lunch!

Some may say that my current obession with my 'Lil Darlin' borders on the psychotic! I read today where the incubation period of the Canada Goose is an average of 28 days. This can vary slightly due to temperature, and given the unusually cool weather we've had lately (remember the "Snail" from my previous post this weekend?!) I imagine it may be a slightly longer incubation period for her gaggle of goslings to be hatched. Since I've now been watching her for a while, I figured that I need to increase my visitation so as to not miss them when they do hatch! I MUST see them!!!

Only 1 posted shot of her today ... and I can tell you're all thrilled! I noticed one of her downy feathers hanging off a branch just a few feet away. I really liked the shallow DOF by focusing on the feather. Your opinions may vary wildly.

As anyone who has visited my blog over time knows, I like shots that are sharp. Actually, I'm a sharpness addict. But, walking by these reflected tulips, they really caught my eye. Intentionally, I stopped the lens down to slow down the shutter speed to give some nice movement to the water. You know what? I rather like it! It reminds me of a painting from one of the great Impressionists. Perhaps I will shoot it again with even less light for a much longer shutter speed.

And lastly, as I was pulling out of the parking lot to go back home, I noticed a Cooper's Hawk dive bombing an unsuspecting meal. Surprisingly enough, this Hawk gave me the opportunity to hook a U-Turn and park my truck, get out and snap this shot before taking off with its prey in its talons. This is approximately a 50% crop (foreground grass cropped out) as I had the 200mm lens on and zero time to change. Yes indeed Sheri that 500mm or 600mm prime would be SOOOOO nice and would have come in VERY handy for this shot!

DancingDolphin · 2008-04-21: 20:44
aurian #4 and #5 just seem so... mysterious! In a good way, of course. I love the DOF in many of these pictures actually. Taken very stealthily. ;)
aurian · 2008-04-21: 20:55
TamaraHarden You're right about the tulips. Looks like a painting by a famous artist, selling for millions these days!!
TamaraHarden · 2008-04-21: 21:00
Madoc I really love how you played with focus here.
The blurry, tall grass in the forefront of shots like #3 & 5 add beautiful softness and a great artistic touch.
Superb colors all around.
Another piece of art my friend!
Madoc · 2008-04-21: 21:13
amyschmamey These are beautful. I love the tulip reflection picture and the last one that you went back to snap. Great blog!

coyoteself LOL...good set and funny commentary

focussed So are you checking on her daily? Twice daily? Three times?.. Have you set up a tent in the park and are now residing there? I need to know the actualy rate of visitation before I can pass judgement on your mental stability.....
Todays images tell me that although you might be "slightly" obsessed with LD (just blame it on the OCD), you still retain some degree of santiy. How else does one explain the variety in persepctives and focus? Clearly there was some sort of creative brilliance going on here ;)
I really love the peek-a-boo feel of #5. I can imagine you hiding behind some folage stalking her hehe.....But overall, these have a lovely softness to them... perhaps all this talk of baby geese and baby lenses is making you all soft and mushy?
Im waiting for a portrait of you and her together sometime in the near future...lol
Bravo Mat :)

vollenda Great series Mat! Keep up the vigil because I want to see those babies! I saw some this weekend at the Ren Faire. I'll have to post them later. Oh, thier fuzziness was cute. :) Way to step out of the box on #2 and I really like #4.

etodd80 Another great bunch of shots. Such great colors on all of these. #1 is a great pose, #4 is unique and a great idea! #5 is just cool composition.

So where are you finding this mother goose of yours? I'm not planning to drive down to Puyallup or wherever to try and steal your photos, I'm just curious :-) Not that I could come close to your photos! Andrea's comments are pretty funny, should I drive down and just look for the guy in the tent? Cool variety of shots and great results!
etodd80 · 2008-04-21: 23:50
Lynda Lovely set. Looking forward to seeing those goslings.

majikmonkee Great set, I really like the differeing DOF in each picture, not to mention the very beautiful subject matter. Hope you get to see the gosslings soon! I have a nest full of robin eggs on my porch that hatched not long ago, now I'm just waiting for them to be "attractive" enough to photograph!
majikmonkee · 2008-04-22: 07:11
Peche Mat, #2 IS reminiscent of an impressionist's painting - I just LOVE it... the colour, the slight blur and reflection: straight to my favourites.
I really love that you have challenged yourself and moved out of that comfortable, sharp-shot place, and into this... it's just superb. I also think that #5 is wonderful - the dof, blur in the foreground, and the colour...
You just get better and better, mate, really you do.
Congratulations, can't wait to see more :)
Peche · 2008-04-22: 08:56

mowestlan Hey there,
the reflected tulips are so neat! Don't mean to sound like the Beav, but gee Wally--way cool! The Bleeding Hearts are my favorite. I love the plant and am going to plant some this year. Thanks for the inspiration!
mowestlan · 2008-04-24: 16:21

bettyluvsduncan I have sooo much competition! Lil' Darlin', Baby Nikki....sheesh! I'm glad you are getting out at lunch and have made a new friend. I can't wait to meet the rest of the family...and to see if they look like mom or dad!

Cool that you were able to get the picture of the hawk too! Talk about perfect timing!
