When we left Chicago's 80 degree weather, we thought we would be getting at least a little bit of warmth on the west coast. Instead we happened upon snowy Soda Springs, where Marc only made it one minute outside before jogging back to the car! Truckee proved to be slightly less... snow-covered... so we stopped for a coffee at the Wagon Train Cafe. All the trains we have been seeing along the drive remind me of my dad, though he tends to prefer the miniature variety.
We ended up in Winnemucca (win-eh-muck-uh) at the Holiday Inn Express and had our first swim of the trip. The small town boasts five casinos, one of which was attached to our hotel. It was far busier than I expected, being the most appealing of the potential places of respite for many miles.
We hit the road early today and made it to the one place I HAD to see this trip - Salt Lake City! My fascination with Mormon history left me intrigued with the area and I had a blast walking around the temple grounds. I even Googled where to pick up my souvenir shot glass ahead of time because I wasn't sure whether they would sell any. The selection at the SLC Visitor Center ended up being the best I've seen this trip, go figure!
Marcus did not want to stick around SLC too long, so off we went through the mountains toward Colorado. Something I have discovered about myself this trip is that I am a TERRIBLE mountain driver, err, passenger. I wish there'd been a camera on my face when we made our way on the winding "short cut" between Santa Rosa and Napa - I knew my fear of going over the edge was irrational, so I was simultaneously laughing at myself and crying with terror! That little mountain was NOTHING compared to what we've traveled since, but at least the roads are smoother and there seem to be more barriers along the edges. Thank goodness my husband enjoys the driving so I can keep my eyes closed.
In the middle of the (oh so scary but dauntingly beautiful) mountains is Groggs Brewing Company in the town of Price, Utah. We picked up a growler to add to our collection and ate way too much pizza before powering through to Grand Junction, Colorado. I used the Priceline app on my phone to book us a room with free wifi and a fridge for our beer. Tomorrow we'll stop in Denver for lunch and make our way to Nebraska!
