Day 248 - Black and white snow frustration

2010.12.11
pixel
Note the lack of snow in these shots, I guess that's why I'm happier with these.

This in was taken without a tripod, I was leaning on the railing over the spillway.
pixel
I am actually quite pleased with this one.
pixel
Same here, I don't have huge issues with this one, with the possible exception of too dark on the left side, or too bright on the right?
pixel
I felt there was enough brush in the background to offset the snow, so I'm fairly pleased at how it turned out.
pixel
This one started out poorly, but cropping helped to remove a large white area in the top right.
pixel
I had a chance to get out this afternoon for a walk, so I headed for the local walking trail. I have to say, shooting in the snow is not my favourite activity, mostly because I haven't a clue how to do it correctly. I need help - this is sooo frustrating.

This post has the shots I've processed and am most pleased with. (but not completely thrilled about)

The post I'm linking to shows the shots I can't make work. Feel free to leave your thoughts on what I should have done differently, or what I can do in Lr3 now that the damage is done.

onlyricky well marjorie, the first thing you should do at all is all these are nice!
what is sooo frustrating about photographing snow? it is not moooving!
lool
i know i know, it must be about the light uh? and because it is white it must be hard to get the detail.
well

1# - is nice! makes me remember of our short talk about the niagara's falls lol
2# - is very mcmommy! so I like it! makes me remember your style!
3# - is that actually snow? or lichens? looks like lichens to me..maybe a snow lichen new specie lol
4# - the berries are awesome, though makes me think, which color are they? blackish or redish? I always like to see the color from the berries..dont ask me why, but even though the shot went nice!
5# - what thorny shot.
for me, you're doing very well, no appointments to tell :)
and no i'm not pretending to be nice, it is what i think :) (i'm a mind reading today lol)

girafferacing Great B&W images! Snow can be tricky - I always overexpose by around a stop to avoid grey snow. It's a bit hit and miss (depending on the lighting conditions) but at least experimentation I'd free with digital and there's always LR if you get it wrong!!
