In anticipation of Saturday's photo shoot, I decided to practice with Orion... he loves having his photo taken, which helps a lot... in fact, this was the easy part.

I am not convinced I have the tones right. I am open to suggestions here, skin tones are difficult, to say the least.

In part of my research I read that using a gray card is a good idea to get a reference point for white balance.. does anyone do this? I don't have one, but I would get one if it would help, provided I could find one fast and cheap.

danrav Marjorie, I am not capable of commenting on technical issues, but I can tell you the expressions and the images are simply wonderful and precious to the max! Each and every one!!! Bravo and good luck!

????? I wish i vad something creative to share, but i have no experience of greycards and such. I think the portraits look great and the tone seems to work:-)
????? · 2011-08-22: 14:16
????? I never heard of a gray card, will have to google that... sorry. As far as what I see, these are really good, you captured some really great expressions / emotions and poses.

I like the highlights on his hair in 3 & 4, and also the backgrounds especially # 3. I think they are sellable, check the tone balance and adjust that if you have to... Good job... :D

GKorts I would not go soo shortlisted go for the grey card. Because you have to practice a lot with it. If you shot in RAW you have not only the possibility to choose 6 or 7 prefixed setting you can click also on 1 Kelvin exact. It is a bit more PP work but not that much. And do not aloud that your model will wear red, red makes your WB dizzy
GKorts · 2011-08-22: 14:54
GKorts check it out with him in another tshirt color
GKorts · 2011-08-22: 14:56
karmankwarner I like this set, I think you did a good job. I would not even begin to give technical advice cause I ain't figured out the settings on my camera (as of yet) *insert grin* I am interested in seeing the next set. :)
karmankwarner · 2011-08-22: 15:22
LeahThomas I did just read in Scott Kelby's lightroom book that if you shoot in raw mode you can change the white balance in post processing. If you're worried about not getting it right you could do that..? I think the color here looks fine though, adorable model :)
LeahThomas · 2011-08-22: 17:38
Andarta What a handsome little model you have :-) I think you did a great job with these, I added 2 and 4 to favs.
Andarta · 2011-08-22: 19:02
nataliemanco Unfortunately I have no idea on technic but I love this portrait set on Orion. So much feel in it. #2 and the last shot is brilliant capture
nataliemanco · 2011-08-22: 19:46
GranAbby Pictures to keep for the future. If you shoot in raw, then you can correct the digital red later in Lightroom or Photoshop. The skin tones look fine on my monitor.
GranAbby · 2011-08-22: 19:49
djnana Precious portraits of a precious face! I don't know how you could want better than this! #2 is just adorable - what a great model you have handy!
djnana · 2011-08-22: 21:24
lukesmom I love these! You really did a good job. I don't know anything about a grey card but I think I would have to agree with the gentleman that said to have your subject wear a lighter color. Just a gut reaction but it makes sense. Great work!
lukesmom · 2011-08-22: 21:34
liveandletlive I have no technical advice either (duh- lol) but I love 1 and 2. They look so natural and gorgeous. I think the shirt color is perfect. I think it brings out the warmth in his hair and skin tone and compliments them perfectly. Just my opinion.
liveandletlive · 2011-08-22: 22:09
eternity65 These are great Marj!! And must agree with Gerd, try to avoid red. Don't worry if you haven't got a grey card, there's enough ways to do that during PP if need be (i haven't got a grey card either ;-) )
eternity65 · 2011-08-22: 23:09
lookagain What a cutie....and really love the relaxed look in #2!! Only suggestion I have is definitely shoot in RAW so you can more easily "fix" things later....also, provides a higher quality image, IMO.
lookagain · 2011-08-23: 07:59
stabeez You certainly don't need to worry with a co-operative model like Orion. I have no advice other than to agree that I have read the same about red although it sure worked here. Use RAW. A grey card isn't necessary but they can be found inexpensively at local shops. Orion's parents must love these shots.
stabeez · 2011-08-23: 08:59
ArtBee What a delightful little fellow! You got yourself a great model there Marjorie. What a wonderful smile.I think these portraits are fantastic! Blonde, fair skinned and a red shirt are not an easy combination to photograph, but you did a great job!
ArtBee · 2011-08-23: 09:01
????? grey cards are a pain, wouldn't recommend trying to learn one on such short notice. (although it looks right here, I don't see a problem.) you're going to do great
????? · 2011-08-23: 09:53
lismel I don't know if the tones are wrong, but maybe a little bit. I also think that maybe the color of the shirt was not ideal, given his complexion and his hair color. It may have an impact on your picture. But I'm not sure.
Anyway, this set is lovely ! My favorite is the last one, it doesn't look like he's posing, he's just being natural !
lismel · 2011-08-23: 10:01
Eiram I love his expression - you can tell he enjoys the shooting:) and that is important!
Maybe try another shirt next time...light blue maybe?.
Eiram · 2011-08-23: 13:24
girafferacing These are absolutely adorable - no.2 especially.
girafferacing · 2011-08-24: 18:02
jlmphotos Photos look good. Nice and warm. forget the 18% gray card. Shoot jpeg+raw if the camera allows. Try to nail the image in camera as much as possible.
I personally like the warmness of these shots even if the white balance is a tad off.
jlmphotos · 2011-08-25: 12:37
Keryl Well, I'm learning new stuff here. What's wrong with wearing red? Our bridemaids wore red and I thought they looked beautiful...must be I'm wrong.
Keryl · 2011-08-25: 18:37
renatomartins Very nice portraits
