fruit splash photo technique challenge

So after a week of having no time to think about the challenge, and in desperation to shoot something after being too busy to think about it all day, I thought I'd give the fruit splash challenge a shot.

The first thing I realized is that I have no clear glass containers. None. I have young children, maybe that's why. I briefly considered the fish tank, but thought the poor goldfish wouldn't appreciate being relocated because of the creative whim of the one who feeds him. Selfish fish.

I have young children, which means I also have wine glasses. Yep. Multi-purpose wine glasses, it seems. So I set up the wine glass, filled it with water and looked for fruit small enough to drop in without breaking said glass. Second realization.... no small fruit. But wait! I have ... tomatoes! They are fruit (yes, they are), and in this case, they are small, being grape tomatoes.

Set up camera, set up glass, set up tomatoes..... how hard could this be?

Hard, as it turns out.

I took 55 shots.

11 were empty....

24 were full of tomatoes but too late for the splash...

6 rim shots...

a pitiful handful of shots that you could consider "splash" shots... this was the best of the handful.

Conclusion.... This kind of shooting is all about timing, which I seem to need practice with.... and wine glasses should be single purpose :)

I'm glad I did this though, and I hope that some day I decide to try again, with better setup and better planning.... maybe after the demise of the selfish fish :)
