Don't wreck my house!

2009.02.07

We heard an almost industrial/mechanical sound vibrating through the house this morning. I had an idea what it was, so I put my long lens on my camera and went out to investigate. What I found were these two Northern Flickers (a type of woodpecker). They were over in the neighbor's yard and wouldn't let me get too close, but here they are. The one with the red patches at the base of his beak is the male and the plainer one is the female. Go figure.

????? Interesting... both their posture, and the slight curvature of their beaks would indicate that they have a bit of a lead deficiency.

astrobrojler Nice story and great pictures, I especially like #1 – maybe they'll finally choose tree, not the house? ;)
