The jo (staff). Note the foot position - called a "hanmi." It's simple in theory, but hard to get right when moving around.

Setting up the pin. The person about to be pinned is getting ready to tap the mat, which means, "I'm twisted up. Good pin! Now let go."

The end of the test - multiple attackers! That's not a headlock; it's the beginning of a throw. There were actually three attackers at this point.

Aikido - "the way of energy and harmony." Do: path or way; ki: energy or life force; ai: harmony.

Attackers throw themselves off balance because the punch or kick never lands. The aikido practitioner keeps his balance, blends with the attacker's movements, and redirects the attacker's own momentum.

It's hard to envision ever getting beyond white belt on Day 1. My husband was determined to just keep practicing. Seven years after Day 1, he was ready for this test.
