Such binaries run through much of your work, N, and nowhere more explicitly presented as here. Both pictures pivot on notions of division, not least in the apparently flat surfaces on the boulders, as if sheared by a mighty blade and allowed to roll aprt, whilst simultaneously inviting a more sentimental emotion of joining, of coming together, a spirited concordance, particularly evident in the trunks, the branch of one appearing to be reaching out to its partner in a tentative embrace. As the punning title indicates, both possibiities remain, thus eschewing a didactic hermeneutic in favour of a more artistic, poetic interpretation of the natural world through a lens whose relationship to humanity is tantalizingly in question but, by the beautiy of its sensory - here one might say sensual - imagery, wholly assured.
