02-28-08 Writer's Block

2008.02.28

The students used oil pastels.

This is part of the Wilma Rudolph set.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Another one from MLK, Jr.

As I am sure that most of you know, February is Black History month. My after school writing/art club, Writer's Block, put together some work to display to celebrate this part of our American history.

The artwork is kind of hard to see well, but it did turn out wonderful. The students used Jacob Lawerence's "The Great Migration"
http://www.columbia.edu/itc/history/odonnell/w1010/edit/migration/migration.html
for inspiration. Each student picked a famous African-American to depict the life of, and wrote cinquain poems to go along with each part of their visual story.

I just thought I would give everyone a little peek at what they have completed.

Peche Congratulations to you and your students on a wonderful project. From what I can see of the artwork, I want to see more! I love seeing what people think and feel about such important moments, and people, in history :)

oldbabe Wow! Is it 5th grade you teach? Or is the club of all ages? I love those little oil pastels and the project sounds both fun and educational. Cute name for a writing/art club too.
