Most hdr's are a flat kind of lifeless because all of the vibrancy and dynamics are missing. I think your hdr is good because you had a good composition in the first place. You didn't go overboard in the merging process. This is better then most hdr's i've seen.

I like them both for very different reasons - I love the explosive color in the first and the calm feeling in the second

I prefer the contrast on the first, I can see the clouds better, then as it was said already it gives a dramatic effect to the shot that was classic (but nice) on 2. I'm sure you have some shots of Scotland to show....while waiting for your camera ;)

I like the HDR, it brings out so much detail in the clouds and water.

I like them both.....the HDR is, as everyone has said, very dramatic. I think I prefer the second, though

That is a great example of HDR. The sky is lost in the second, but it becomes the central character in the first. Great stuff!
