good portrait question do you really belive taking away all those things makes for simplicity? doesn't it just change to a new level of complication?

As per usual my dear you are making all our little brains work and work and work.......I have to say this is a concept I struggle with also. I think all the things that bring us joy ultimately define who we are.....even if some of those things are only tangible through monetary means. Would stripping us all bare of everything - our experiences, our clothing, our circumstances- ultimately strip us bare of who we are? How can you become the person you are without all of those circumstances and experiences?! I don't know...Infact, I don't even know what im talking about anymore as it is 12:30am and I should be asleep.....lol..so pretty much just ignore all I just wrote :P You know what I think of natural faces ;) and I know how you feel about putting yourself out there like this..kudos to you!! ..freedom is liberating is it not :)

Perhaps a kind of Zen-moment. The awareness of unity!?

Funny that simplicity in itself can be something so difficult when it really comes down to it. Excellent post...both picture and words! And to be honest, the first thought I had when I saw that picture was, "How pretty" before I even went on to read everything you had written there. You did a wonderful job with this post though :)

Excellent photo, interesting words, especially since I have been there - right down to just me - and am now busy making the t-shirts. iI's true you can chose simplicity on your own terms, but it is also true that everyone is potentially only one trauma away from having simplicity imposed on them. It's a strange thing, it's definatley survivable, but it either re-aligns you and makes you better for it, or it breaks you. ?:o)

I like the way your post stops me and makes me think of my own definition of simplicity. I like the pensive portrait. What does it mean to simplify? And there is a difference between having simplicity imposed and making an effort to simplify. Thanks for being so open.

Expressive and heartfelt words. In this day and time simplicity is just NOT simple at all. Thanks so much for sharing.

you always have the most thought provoking posts! i love it! first of all your self-portrait is fabulous! i think it's great that you put yourself out there, it's not selfish at all! while it's obvious that a lot of things are becoming more complex in this world - i think that there are definitely more and more conviences as well. i believe that there can still be simple joys. like hugs. i love hugs and they make you feel so fabulous. i think we all have a lot of extra baggage in life that we could do without. some people like the craziness of it - i have friends that thrive on it. however i think that we should never forget the simple things - never let things get so crazy that you can't find them any more. so cheers to the simple joys and cheers to your post :-)

i wouldn't dare to bare myself in all of my simplicity. i give you a lot of credit for being emboldened by your own. as andrea said, you're always making our brains work through your expressions, be them photographic or linguistic. it's a beautiful, if simple, portrait darling. l&h!

Wow Jess this is deep! Simple joys can be so many different things to different people. Its comforting knowing that you can be joyful with who you are, not necessarily what can become after your daily routines. This is a wonderful portrait, and wonderfully thought provoking text to accompany it!
