February reflections

2008.02.29
the weekly grind has come to a halt, once again...

this month i think we've all felt this...

coming home, off to exercise, then back, sit down, relax, eat, a glass of wine, a book... and sleep...

late at night, driving home, things become a blur

the next morning at work, the piles of paper just kept piling up...

i felt like this little weed... trying to be colourful when I felt oppression and hardness around me

one big joy and love in my life came home... my brother

and just as he returned, i turned 26... sheesh... on the other side of the twenties now

i had a little party, and the best of my friends showed... these two surprised me greatly and along with four other special people, made my night and my birthday (there we no nice shots of me or the man from this night unfortunately)

there was a lovely Valentine's dinner at one of our favourite restaurants in St Kilda...

this month i received a bunch of red roses - my first ever, from my brother

it was also my mother's birthday... these lovely lights hung from the roof where we celebrated

ah yes... and this too... hopefully these things happen in threes because i've had my share now!

I've felt way too much like i've just had to give way to a lot of things lately... a resolution for days to come is to stop letting people walk over me

I saw one of my favourite artists, Feist, perform live...

and as I studied this Persian plate, I started thinking about learning again, about changing everything...

“Reflect upon your present blessings of which every man has many - not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”
- Charles Dickens

With the end of my favourite month of the year, I felt it time to reflect on a few things that have passed. On a leap year, even when the month is only just slightly longer, this month has passed as if it were but a fleeting moment in my memory.

This post it to remind me that every moment exists when it does, and for that reason alone, it's precious and the best that it can be at that point in time. Thanks to my friends focussed, artbug, photopoet, sjasf and Zedsdead, for inspiring this post.

focussed What an eventful month Jessica....I love the thought of living in the now and accepting the feelings of our circumstances for what they are. Allow yourself to feel the joy..as well as allowing the pain to be known. Its often uncomfortable but, as your post so eloquently shows, all difficult moments are over with in time and are replaced by the next moment...whatever that may be.
I really like "give way"....something about the colors and the mood.........and tell me, who were the ridiculously good looking couple at you party ?!..Id also love to know how they surprised you....
I have no idea how I was part of the inspiration for this Jess but what an honor. Your thought processes are endlessly fascinating and complex and Im just a dipsy fruit cake most of the time..lol
Happy leap Year....
xo

yamaleekis Pretty pictures, interesting thoughts, I think .. The road to happiness is a long and tortuous ... Greetings. Happy leap year

Fali84 i LOVE shot number 12
it is beautifully composed
Fali84 · 2008-02-29: 06:11
Burstmode as long as there is coffee, all else is manageable. I am curious about the Persian plate...what does it represent?
Burstmode · 2008-02-29: 06:22
Vil0443 Nice pictures. Besides, they work as a whole and I appreciate when someone bravely opens to the public and tells stories.

For me, your stories are as interesting as the ones of Dickens. A person from a far land tells stories and shows pictures. wow

MHJphotos Your posts are always so engaging! Happy Belated Birthday by the way!

Perhaps you could also think of the 'weed' a little differently? When I saw it, I immediately thought 'hey, that plant found a way to make its presence felt, to not let everything around it hold it down. What determinatation that little weed must have to reach for the sun, against all odds!' Its often a bummer that weeds are so resilient, but we could take valuable lessons from them.

Thanks for putting yourself out there, I enjoyed this set immensely!

Madoc I recognize your inspirations here, as well as your personal touch of course.
Moods are definitely striking in these shots.
I love this month too, but I feel like I'll love next one even more! ; )

DancingDolphin A very nice thought provoking post... thanks for sharing your thoughts! Great shot of your friends , I like it when people feel free to be silly in front of the camera.

lexlevans wow - that is a lot to happen in a month. i can relate to a lot of things here - like trying to figure things out and who i am trying to be in this world. oh, before i forget, i have that Banksy book too! my brother bought it for me when he was in England a few months ago and gave it to me for christmas. very cool stuff.

sometimes my life is too routine, other times too unpredictable. i do my best to change things when i'm not happy, like pursuing a new job, but sometimes that is beyond my control and i don't get what i want right away.

very nice reflection on things - i think it's always important to do that to make sure you are on the track that makes you happiest :-) great set of photos to get with great words (again!)!!

KerBear Jess what a great post - looking back on your favorite month!! Really love #4. It does seem that 2008 has started off quite quickly... I can't believe it is almost March already! And HOORAY for the Canadian artist... she really is doing so well! :)

bamommy Happy Belated Birthday. I kept looking at photo #9 and saying "wow, those two look familiar!" It's Andrea and Mark. I didn't know you all knew each other. Did she tell you my family and I are coming to visit in 2011.....or was it 2010? Anyway, how cool it that. She is such a cool person so I know that if you are friends with her you are cool as well. Ok.......Sorry for rambling. I love all the photos
bamommy · 2008-02-29: 17:46
photopoet Thanks for the mention—Don't we all bounce off one another? That's the beauty of this blog. The first photo is a great way to start and an interesting composition. I resonate to your creativity as you go through the month and why am I not surprised to see Banksy on your table? " Some people want to make the world a better place. I just wanna make the world a better-looking place. If you don't like it, you can paint over it!" Thanks for your thoughts. They always make me stop and think.

oldbabe What a busy month! And, ah to be young again and be able to think deep thoughts! Happy belated b'day to you.

photopoet Do You also like Basquat? Maya Angelo has a book of poems with Basquat's illustrations. A poem http://www.swaraj.org/shikshantar/life_mayaangelou.htm is the title of the book.

BreezyOnTheEyes beautiful post jess. i love all these photos but esp....

3) because there is a tamborine on your coffee table.

7) because your brother is wearing an afro and seems like such a character.

8) because it is just a gorgeous shot.

9) beacuse mark and andrea are so adorable.

15) because i heart feist. on my last trip to brooklyn with nick before we moved out to california, we went and saw her at a giant converted outdoor swimming pool. she was incredible and i kick myself for not having my camera at the time. so ridiculous. but, i have the memories none the less.

it's good to reflect. it's how you learn to appreciate the things you have. l&h jessica!
