Something opens our wings - theme

2008.03.19

Ever since I was little, I have long harboured a desire to visit the lands of Rumi, Omar, the Sufi, the Whirling Dervish, Zoroastrianism, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

I was obsessed with the Persian Empire, the lands of Turkey and Syria, of Afghanistan and India... and dreamt of genies and forbidden caves... yes, I had a vivid imagination...

I was at work on Monday taking profile shots of one of our Islamic Studies professors, and was drawn to his vast and impressive collection of Islamic texts that filled a wall-length bookcase.

For a fleeting moment, as I was pressing down on the button, I was overwhelmed by the history, and meaning, contained within those texts... I wished I was standing elsewhere, that I was somewhere in a desert, listening to the last sonnets of Rumi sung by Pedram Derakhshani...

These are the places I truly want to go, more than anywhere else in the world. Where I feel insignificant, where I can feel history, a connection to a past and tradition still so strong, so embedded within the landscape...

“We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust."
- Rumi

storytaylor have you already see "Persepolis" the movie?
storytaylor · 2008-03-19: 04:41
wanderers Many Persians live in Germany-and in Australia?
I also adore this culture-must be an interesting place.
Especially Isfahan!

focussed I can picture you now on a magic carpet, wind blowing in the air, with nima in a pair of genie pants...heheh.
Traveling always makes you feel insignificant. Its what I love most about it. Gives you the realization that it isn't about you....at all...never was and never will be..and puts everything into so much more perspective.
What fascinating looking books those are!

Zedsdead Well I have seen Persepolis ' The Ruin', and it must have been quite something to see to people of that era.

I love old books for their look and feel, and I love ancient tales and legends for what they tell us about ourselves and our desire for something more... Where others seek the fabulous and beyond, I exult in the idea that throughout all time we have been very very human indeed. ?:o)

ambersunsets Amazing shots! I understand what you mean about being absorbed and lost in history. It really isn't about us.
Thanks for sharing:-)

CJLata Life has many things to offer us... great photo, love the colors.

photopoet Perhaps because I'm home with "the cold" I am doubly drawn to these books and your words. I love Persian paintings and calligraphy. Last year the MFA hosted an exhibit of contemporary Turkish and Iranian artists —the art of calligraphy, marbleization and illumination. It transported me as the books transported you.

The photo is wondrous—a magic carpet.

“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.”

Rumi

vollenda Those books are lovely and I, too, am curious about what's inside them. I had the same dreams and fantasies about far away places when I was growing up but for me it was Egypt. It was fun to hear about your dream to see that part of the world.

A good friend of mine is from a wealthy family in India... she came over her on her own to do her post grad and has stayed... I told her though when she finally gets the opportunity to return home for a visit... I plan on going with her... they have such a fascinating and I believe beautiful culture!

Emma You must go and travel to these places...life is far too short to miss out.

Do it girl! Make those plans...go and photograph it all for us to see :)

xx

Ps. I grew up wanting to go to Australia (from the age of 9)...I wanted to go to the furthest place possible ( I later realised that was Tahiti though!)...so after university, that's what I did. I went backpacking around Asia and onwards to Aus. Arriving in Melbourne and travelling up the east coast...I made my dreams come true. I knew I had to, as I knew I would forever wonder what if...
