Time told me...

My cousin Kallum, my cousin Oliver and Oliver's girlfriend, Sophie

Aunty Marianne topping up the drinks

Aunty Marianne tries to evade a photo (she's starting to turn her head away as she laughs at me)

My partner in crime, Uncle Tony, snapping the other side of the dinner table

A lull between drinks and food...

Caught in reflection... my Grandma Brenda

Waiting for the cake, the talk and drinks flow

The chocolate mud birthday cake melting beneath the candles

Last Thursday I made an impromptu decision to jump on a plane with my mother at the start of the weekend to go home, up to Canberra, for my grandmother's 84th birthday dinner. It had been almost two years since I had last seen her, and it was great to be able to surprise her with our presence.

Grandma Brenda hasn't exactly had an easy life. The details of it astound most people who hear it. Rejection, loss and bitterness have been constant elements that have plagued her, and as a result, my mother and her siblings when they were growing up. Some of these photos show clear hallmarks of that past. Just a look can say so much, no matter the setting. Perhaps that's one thing I really like about an honest photograph.

One day soon maybe she will tell me more of her past than ever before; I've just embarked on tracking down our family history and will face an uphill battle to get the information I need to put the pieces together.

oldbabe I'll bet grandma enjoyed the impromptu decision. Nice birthday photos to cherish in years to come.

Good luck on the family history. I've been doing mine for years...mostly through research...the families on both sides seem to clam up when the questions start!

BreezyOnTheEyes once again i am intrigued by this post. you are ever the thought provoker. i wish you all the luck finding more out about your family history. many a time have then been when i have tried to do the same and come up short. my grandmother doesn't share much and doesn't know much because she was to be seen and not heard. no questions asked. one day i hope to spend time with old photographs and jounals, letters and memorabilia from both sides of my family to try and find a true sense of where i come from.

this is a beautiful post and set. excellent job.
