Mount Buffalo - day two of our road trip

2008.04.24
The Cathedral at Mount Buffalo

The view from the top of the Horn across the alpine country (this was just one aspect as the view spans 360 degrees)

A couple of very energetic kids who were at the top of the Horn with their parents when we were... this is them bounding back down the rock steps with dad yelling at them to slow down...

Mat, you inspired me... I noticed the lichen on the rock as we climbed down and crouched down to get a shot :)

A snowgum spreading up into the sky

This snowgum was like a lightning bolt...

Nima climbing down the rock steps... and trying not to fall over me taking photos! lol

My favourite out of all my shots across this trip... I really worked hard on this one and am so please at how soft this thistle looks...

These trees looked like they were forming a guard of honour for some unknown being...

The last steps back onto some more solid ground at the bottom of the Horn's climb

This little fella flew in from across the lake on the sub-alpine plateau just to check if we might have some food... hehehe
He quacked his way around me and got so close... he was a real poser ;)

You'd seriously think the colours were fake looking at this shot of the lake on the sub-alpine plateau... it's just so gorgeous

My little friend :)

Tired from the day's walking and climbing, we decided to get a fire going... it was going to be 1 degree that night...

Ahh, the shot taken before the serious marshmellow overdose... lol... we got so sugared up from a few marshmellows each we turned silly... hehehehe

The second day of our trip we decided to head to Mount Buffalo, to climb The Horn.

It truly is a beautiful place (and yes, you may get sick of my overuse of the word in my next few posts! lol). Wind, water and ice eroded away the granite leaving behind the mountain's spectacular rock formations.

Explorers Hume and Hovell named Mount Buffalo in 1824, likening it to a sleeping buffalo as they passed present day Glenrowan (a small town about 70 kilometres away, with a deep history and strong connection to Australian folklore, as it is the home of Ned Kelly).

The Horn rises to 1723 metres, and is the highest point on the sub-alpine plateau.

These shots are of the climb, the surrounds, and the sub-alpine plateau.

And, of course, of the hard-earned campfire at the end of a long and fun day ;)

MHJphotos Ah shucks Jess! Glad I could be an inspiration to someone out here, even if its just to shoot some lichen! And, what spectacular lichen it is! =)

I'm loving that you guys took us along on our vacation. You and Andrea inspire me to do the same thing next time!
