Beechworth to Huggins Lookout - day three of our road trip

2008.04.25
Snapped from the car window driving from Bright to Beechworth on the Great Alpine Road...

The walls of the original courthouse in Beechworth's historic precinct

A police station window...

The police station's stable...

We used to pick these off as kids and throw them at each other...

Deep reds to yellows...

The light through the tree

HM Prison Beechworth - probably about the most picturesque prison I've ever seen, it ceased operation as a functioning prison in 2004. This was built in 1859 and completed in 1864 at a cost of 47,000 pounds (that's a hell of a lot of money!!)
Unfortunately, like many things in Victoria, the site been sold to a developer who is yet to release any information on their plans.

Street frontage...

A shed next to the now defunct Beechworth Railway Station

I wasn't really trying to focus on any one thing in this shot... I really just liked the colours... :)

The same old shed next to the railway station

Full sun doesn't make for the best portrait light... but I just liked the fact that we were happy and wanted to show it :)

Mmmmm... afternoon delight!
Sour cherry and dark chocolate cake at the Beechworth Provender.

This little tub of vegies was growing in the main street!

No explaination for this... I loved the shadow and colour...it reeked of an old crime story setting to me

The Ovens Hospital facade

More of the facade...

Main street in Beechworth

The view from Huggins' Lookout across Bright, shortly before the sun set on yet another day.

Dirty wheels... well, not that dirty yet ;)

I snapped this one of Nima when he wasn't paying attention...

Another night by the campfire... minus the marshmellows!

We woke on the Friday morning, early, and cold from a night of near zero temperatures... the sleeping bags and tent worked wonders in keeping us warm but not so good when you have to get up!

It turned into a stunning autumn day and we took the drive to Beechworth, about 58km from Bright. Beechworth has to be the tidiest, best preserved town from the gold rush era in Victoria (the 1850s) - it's almost a little too perfect...

We arrived as the local Anzac Day memorial was underway in the main park, watched on for a while (I decided not to take pictures as there were a lot of very emotional people) and then decided to go for a wander before seeking out lunch a little later.

Starting out in the historic precinct, we ended up walking up to the La Trobe gardens and back (about a 40 minute round trip), before lunch at the local provender, followed by more walking.

We then walked down where I'd seen the facade of an old building standing when we'd first arrived a couple of hours earlier... it turns out it is the now empty site of Beechworth’s first hospital, built in 1857 at a cost of 2,347 Pounds. Most of the hospital was demolished in 1940 for salvageable materials during the second World War.

All that remains today is the facade and remnants of the once grand gardens (you can see the remaining Bunya Pine and Californian Redwood trees through the facade's windows).

After Beechworth, we headed back to Bright, and ventured up to Huggins' Lookout, a great 4WD track that shows some spectacular views of Bright...

At the end of the day, we were exhausted... we grabbed dinner at the local fish and chippery and ate it in front of our campfire, as the drunk thirty-year old women on the site next to us sung along to Britney Spears, acapella style... lol

etodd80 Lots of cool buildings in Beechworth. I like the door in #4 and the prison wall in #8. Great color and DOF too in #5. Those look like they would hurt to throw them at each other! :-)

Cool sunset photo too. Looks like another fun day. Too bad you didn't get a picture of the acapella Britney lady :-)

Emma Whoa Jess. These are lovely. Your guy is looking HOT in #13 ;)

I really love the Autumn leaves and the fire at the end, which finishes off your set perfectly.

I cannot believe you were camping in such low temperatures! You ozzies are made of hard stuff... :)

BreezyOnTheEyes wow you are excellent at "reportage"! i feel like i was there! i think i even heard that woman singing! superb set yet again. i love how different this one is than yesterday. it seems you really took advantage and went exploring into different worlds, only one day apart. i really love the shots of Nima, i think that express perfectly the mood of this voyage. of course i am a total nut for old buildings and architecture, so i can't even pick a favorite from this post. i do love that prison though, what a beautiful place to be locked up lol

excellent once again. nice work jess ^_^

ncshutterbug Another fantastic set. I feel like I'm on vacation with you!

The prison set is amazing. It's incredible to think that it was still in operation four years ago. Wow!

Shot #20 is breathtaking - I just love it. #22 is a wonderful portrait of Nima - I love the lighting. And that last one - so great!

vollenda You are having a great adventure! This is a beautiful set which shows the autumn colors so well! #4 and #17 are my favorites. Too bad about the prison! I hope they don't tear it down. :(

oldbabe Camping in the cold weather. I'm not sure that is for me! Thanks for a visit to the OUTSIDE of the police station, and those leaves are just beautiful. Funny about the things you threw around. They look dangerous - like a mace! I want to know more of the PO crime story ;-) Thanks for warming me up by the fire...after that day I'm ready for bed!
