It was March when I last visited Athens and one day I took the ferry for the short journey to the island of Egina - or Aegina depending, as always, on how you merge the Greek alphabet into English!
The town was full of locals and not tourists and I had a lovely day in spite of the clouds looking menacing.
A highlight was lunch in a taverna - This traditional restaurant is located at the waterfront of Aegina just in front of the fishing boats & the Aegina fruit boats (they seel fruit and vegetables from boats moored along the quay). Maridaki's (pictured) has a wonderful view of the port & the harbour. Lots of food to choose from: all kinds of fresh fish and meat, and a large variety of "mezedes"; plates of traditional food. It was excellent - and washed down with a caraf of good Greek wine made for a very pleasant afternoon!
In the summer Aegina town is packed solid with pleasure boats, ferries and tourists - but out of season it has great charm.
