Bye bye Wapping - and (accidentally) more grey photos!

2007.09.08
Wapping is on the Thames - between Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf

Tobacco Dock is not on the Thames - neither is it Wapping's finest attraction - only one shop in this shopping development is still open!

It must have seemed like a good idea at the time!

And the view from my window

Wapping lane - local shops

Gastronomica! Great coffee, great sandwiches and just a simply great place!

the sign says Violent Wash can cause death!

This is the famous Prospect of Whitby pub

Shadwell basin

And to end with, my favourite pic for today!

It has been a very strange week here. Things which I do not understand seem to have turned life upside down. Not just for me - but for those around me. One friend reckons its the interplanetary aspects - and he may well be right - but there has certainly been something in the air!

When I started this blog I made a solemn rule I would not blog about work! But.....

Well, yesterday I decided it was time to move on from my 'dream job' and I guess that in a while it will be bye bye Wapping! and hello something else!!! No idea what - and a bit aprehensive- but hey! Nothing venture, nothing gained!!

And I thought that this was a good excuse for a little photo tour of this little-known part of London.

The Wapping area was first settled by Saxons, from whom it takes its name - the home of Wæppa's people. Over the years it developed along the embankment of the Thames. John Stow, the 16th century historian, described it as a "a filthy strait passage, with alleys of small tenements or cottages inhabited by sailors' victuallers".

Nowardays its rather upmarket - it was heavily bombed during the war and now there are many exxclusive blocks of flats - and poorer accomodation too - all mixed together.

Its a happy place though - with real character and I shall miss it!

I shall especially miss Gastronomica Wapping - our local coffee shop and deli and haven of good food!

So we start with a view of the River, move to the now defunct Tobacco Dock and then have a brief look at where i have been working before back down Wapping Lane past the shops and on towards the Prospect of Whitby Pub.

This is one of the most famous pubs in London. It dates from 1543. In the seventeenth century it had a reputation as a meeting place for smugglers and villains, and became known as 'Devil's Tavern'. It burned down in the eighteenth century and was then rebuilt and renamed the Prospect of Whitby.

One notorious customer was Judge Jeffreys, the famous 'Hanging Judge'. Today a hangman's noose swings over the river, a reminder of those gruesome times.

Apologies that the pics are grey again! It just was that sort of day! I am not feeling grey at all - I am happy that I have made this big decision and can move on!

ClaudePechabaden PS do you know the card of the Hung man in tarot? It is the card of the renewing, the rebirth into something else. One has to pass by difficult times in order to be born new again.
