The interior of St James's Garlickhythe - also known as Wren's Lantern. The name of the church is derived from the word 'hythe', a Saxon word for a landing place or jetty. The stretch of river close by St James' was London's most important hythe since Saxon, or possibly Roman, times. Garlic, a vital preservative and medicine in the Middle Ages, was unloaded here and traded on Garlick Hill, where the church now stands.

This magnificent instrument, was built by the master organ builder Bernhard Schmidt (commonly known as Father Smith) and was installed in 1718 . It was completely renovated and restored to its original glory in 2007 and sounds amazing! By the way the clock has stopped!! It was 11.30 when I took this.

Friday to the opera, English Touring Opera at Hackney Empire. Lovely opera – Carlise Floyd - Susannah which incidentally is getting its first UK professional performances – odd when it is such a staple in the main opera houses in Chicago and New York. A good night and many old friends there too.
But above all so nice to be able to walk home afterwards!
Saturday the morning trip to the Stoke Newington Organic Market. Got there about one and then I had to queue for ages (about half an hour!!) for sausage and egg bap! But at least no egg spilt this week!!
Saturday night out with friends – Rani - you were great and especially good to bump into Eloise and again. Thanks for your great conversation – and the pink dress was just ……!. Fashion note: Eloise, always one to dress up, was in pink heels, absolutely lovely pink stockings with little roses embroidered on them and a pink jersey dress – it was gorgeous!
Cab home and got to sleep between 4.30 and 5am. Was woken by alarm at 8am as singing at 9.30!! The English Chamber Choir occasionally sing (or is it sing occasionally?) at St James’s Garlickhythe in the City of London. This morning the congregation were treated to Dvorak Mass in D, the Gibbons Hosanna to the Son of David and for the organ solo at the end of the service Vierne’s Carillon which is such a super piece - glorious – especially on this famous organ.
Managed to text Claude during the sermon! Good job we sing from the gallery!!
But the morning was best summed up by walking to bus stop after church in pouring rain and wind – freezing cold. And just missing bus, thinking sod it, will get next one to Liverpool street and home from there. Got it – walked through Station via M and S (and some treats to cheer me up) and !!!! no busses home from Liverpool St as road closed… so have to walk up through Spitalfields and then wait ages for other bus and ………!!!
And that’s that really – another weekend is over! The next one is Easter, I wonder what that will bring?

love this post ... love the market pics and church .. love how you describe it all... please do write about your Easter weekend .. :) thanks for this ;)
Well, this weekend I'm gonna just chill out. Hope you'll enjoy your long Easter break. Your market reminds me of the one we have in Rojales -- lots of fresh veggies and fruits, and lots of chats with the traders. Sure makes up for not being able to speak Spanish with our neighbours 'cos they don't speak it where we live.
