The Regent's Canal - Camden to Islington

2008.06.22

The Canal Museum - see text - is here

There is light at the end of the tunnel!

We have left the bustle of Camden now and are headed East towards Kings Cross and Islington.

There's a mural on the wall of the Constitution pub on St Pancras Way, there are a few apartment blocks, a huge detour round where the new Eurostar lines go and then the Canal Museum. Strange place the Canal Museum - Yes, there really is a London Canal Museum. This is in wha twas originally a warehouse for the storage of ice, (back in the mid 19th century they imported blocks of ice from Norway and stored them in giant wells).

then on and to the Islington Tunnel. This is the longest canal tunnel and measures over half a mile in length. As with the shorter Maida Hill Tunnel (described previously), if you're attempting to follow the canal today you'll have to do what the horses once did and walk up the ramp and through the streets of Islington to the other side.

And in my case time for a rest too. A good place to pause in this fascinating journey.
