Symi - a walk round Chorio

2009.08.23
pixel
About a third of the way down the Kali Strate - a good place to start
pixel
There is an amazing view from here
pixel
I sometime think it looks like toy-town
pixel
a rather special toy-town
pixel
anyway - off up the stairs and off around the village
pixel
ohhh - more stairs!
pixel
nice alleyway
pixel
bit of history here - in this courtyard are a set of steps leading no-where. They are pirate steps - steps that you used to climb up to pour your boiling olive oil or whatever you do pour on pirates from the top - and whilst your door is securely bolted of course!
pixel
not historical - just pomegranates!
pixel
amazing this - the old pharmacy - all boarded up but I managed to get this through a hole in the window - I do hope they preserve it.
pixel
love these steps
pixel
up in the old Medieval part now
pixel
mixed in with relatively modern bits
pixel
they must have been small in those days - this lane is tiny!
pixel
Now at the museum - how times change!
pixel
usual Icons and things
pixel
nice boat
pixel
Glorious decorated chest
pixel
view from museum - I was staying somewhere over on the right
pixel
superb floor patterns - just think how long this took
pixel
courtyard covered with vines
pixel
in what used to be the Symian equivalent of a Manor House
pixel
bit posh!
pixel
great veiw - especially for spotting pirates`!
pixel
more views
pixel
pixel
the interior - a lovely space
pixel
another pomegranate
pixel
and I think this is a lemon
pixel
and now we are back to buildings! (sorry Claude!)

By the way the thick black pipe is the mains water supply - more of this anon - but Symi has no water of its own - if you look at the boat in picture 2 you can see the water tanker.
pixel
A late night the day before but up for an 9am start for a walking tour of the old part of Chorio which dates back to Medieval times. 5 hours we were at it - and it was bloody hot too!

But most interesting and well worth doing.

This is only part one - masses more to come!!
