Slight parallel with 'Poor wandering one' from the Mikado - but wont go into that
In Symi - place of my recent holidays - the streets are too steep and too narrow for vans - so traditional methods win! and poor old donkey gets to carry the cement and all the heavy loads.
I like donkeys.
Typed listening to Verdi's Don Carlos on BBC Radio 3 (every radio in the house is on full volume!) in between the final book of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy - The girl who kicked the hornets' nest. These three novels are simply THE BEST - I have not enjoyed anything like these - ever!!

:-) I rode a donkey to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (and back up)... they are trusty sure footed beasts!
We were told that the mules of Symi (only poor, sterile half-donkeys Robert!) are actually treated with (relatively) great consideration these days....Not pushed beyond their extraordinary capabilities.....
