Hexham is an historic, bustling town in the heart of the Tyne Valley, and has been named as England's favourite market town by Country Life magazine.
Hexham has a wonderful Abbey which originated as a monastery founded by Saint Wilfrid in 674. The crypt of the original monastery survives, and incorporates many stones taken from nearby Roman ruins, probably nearby Hadrian's Wall. The current Hexham Abbey dates largely from the 11th century onward, but was significantly rebuilt in the 19th century.
Like many towns in the Anglo-Scottish border area Hexham suffered from the border wars between the kingdoms of Scotland and England, including attacks from William Wallace (Braveheart!) who burnt the town in 1297. In 1312, Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, demanded and received £2000 from the town and monastery in order for them to be spared a similar fate. In 1346 the monastery was sacked in a later invasion led by King David II of Scotland.
In 1464 during the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Hexham was fought and the defeated Lancastrian commander the Duke of Somerset was executed in Hexham market place.
I love Hexham - it is one of the places I used to visit as a child and it was great to be back. We stayed at the Beaumont Hotel in the street of the same name - a lovely place to stay!

I love the street scenes in this set, Robert... and of course YOUR barber shop!
Shouldn't Bob's the barber have an apostrophe after the B? Oh naughty! Lovely buildings in Hexham. Did you get your haircut there?
Barry is at the palace this weekend if you want to go. I have at last finished my sewing race, so I will be able to reply to email!! xx
