From the abbey itself, there remains today only the two towers of the west facade. These towers originally had five storeys, reaching a height of 53 meters.
The abbey has been a point of observation during the Great War, it suffered bombings that destroyed the top floor, reducing the building height to 44 meters.
If the first two floors are constructed of sandstone, the other two are "white stone", that is to say, chalk, abundant in the region.
The ridge separating the two towers was restored in 1990.

History:

The history of the abbey of Mont Saint-Eloi is told, in part, in the chronicle written in 1786 by Dom Wartel, canon of the abbey. Some elements also reach us through the biography written by St. Ouen on the life of St. Eloi.

Seventh Century: The creation of the abbey remains a subject of legend. According to it, St. Eloi, bishop of Noyon and Tournai, came to this hill to withdraw and pray. He founded an oratory which subsequently went many hermits (hermits). The Bishop of Cambrai and Arras, Saint Vindicien, disciple of St. Eloi, asked to be buried on this place. Now considered the founder of the Abbey is St. Vindicien.

880-881: The religious establishments of the region suffered tremendously from Normandy raid which took place at that time and devastated Arras Therouanne. The monastery was abandoned for many decades.

929: The tomb of Saint Vincidien is found by a student (perhaps in the wood Écoivres). Having committed any disrespect, the child loses his sight, which is made after the recommended protective place. Bishop Fulbert is then erected on the mountain a basilica dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, and houses the relics of Saint Vindicien.

1004: The troops of Richard II, Duke of Normandy, crossed the Atrébatie to join those of the King of France, Robert the Pious. Deserters are planning to go to the basilica to plunder the wealth. The monks initially repel, but the case ends in a bloodbath. Richard issued a decree imposing the restitution to the community.

1068: As part of the church reform initiated by Pope Gregory VII in the eleventh century, the religious community becomes an abbey of canons regular. Liebert, Bishop of Cambrai and Arras, place the canons under the leadership of an abbot and are forced to follow the rule of St. Augustine.

XI - XVIII centuries: 46 successive abbots at the head of the powerful abbey became a place of power whose influence extends to all of Artois.

1140: Abbot Hugh raises the walls of the enclosure of the abbey.

1208-1221: The church was rebuilt as a Gothic style by the abbot was succeeded in 1219 Desire Father Richard. It will last 529 years.

1477: Louis XI set up his army at the siege of Arras.

1654: The Grand Conde installed his headquarters is then dislodged by Turenne.

1750: Abbe Roussel demolish the church to be rebuilt in a classical style. We discovered this place by chance, the previous building did not have three feet of foundation.

1786: Writing chronicles of the abbey of Mont Saint-Eloi by Dom Wartel, canon of the abbey.

1789: The French Revolution requires the closure of all monasteries. The last abbot of Mont Saint-Eloi will be guillotined two years later. In 1793, the church buildings were dismantled and turned into a stone quarry.

1836: In order to avoid the destruction of the last vestiges of the abbey, and the State Department bought the two towers of the west facade.

1914-1918: The firing of artillery rounds are targeting, used as an observation post. The fire in 1915 destroyed the top floor.

1921: Classification under the historical monuments.

Sjiek zeg.

#3, very beautiful scene through the "window". Also like the image in 5. It makes of a very powerful picture. Maybe if there was slightly more contrast in the cross and the monument behind! Otherwise awesome!

MBA dissertation I'm a great lover of art but galleries and museums are most certainly not the new churches. Can you imagine the Tate Modern setting up soup kitchens for the homeless?
