I think I gave the wrong impression with my description under the picture. When I said trucks, I didn't mean lorries, I meant railway trucks which were winched up and down on metal cables (you can see some of the winding gear on the sky line) At the end of their shift, the quarry men would hitch a ride down in the trucks.
