Yes, it is terrible in Japan. A two-minute shock and god knows how many aftershocks. Dozens and maybe hundreds dead. At least it happened mid-afternoon. It would have been far worse at night. My heart goes out to them.
Being on the Pacific Rim we woke to tsunami warning - curious - with view like yours, where the land seems to have been unchanged for centuries - we tend to forget, that in geological terms, centuries are mere blinks of the cosmic eye. We live on a restless planet.
