Philadelphia Flower Show Preview

2008.02.27
This year's theme is "Jazz It Up", with inspiration from the gardens and music of New Orleans. Visitors will enter the show under an archway of piano keys. All that dirt under the musical instruments will be planted with flowers by the day of the show. (This photo was taken from inside the show looking toward the exit).

Just one of the plant flled balconies erected for the show.

A longer view of the balcony above. You can see the bagged plants waiting to be put in position.

A Louisiana style exhibit, complete with Spanish Moss!

A stone wall being built. Yep, they'll build it this week, display it next week, and dismantle it the following week!

Just add water to this pond, and you'll have an instant Louisiana swamp!

This is a life-size metal sculpture of a horse drawing a carriage.

Some flowers waiting to be put in place for the exhibit.

One of the many water features in the show, this pond is filled with water and even has a frog fountain!

The annual Philadelphia Flower Show opens to the public on Sunday, but I had the opportunity to take a Behind The Scenes Tour this afternoon, to see how they set up such enormous and elaborate displays. While still very much a work in progress, many of the buildings, ponds, and large displays are already in place, and it's going to be terrific!

For my international and non-horticulturally inclined friends, the Philly Flower Show is supposedly the largest indoor flower show in the world. It's held in the 10 acre exhibition hall at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and is entirely set up in two weeks. It's open to the public from March 2 to March 9, and will draw over 250,000 visitors from all over the world. There are incredible displays of all live plants, including large trees and bushes, flower judging contests, entertainment, gardening lessons, etc. Check it out at www.theflowershow.com.

basisimages Charming post. :-)) I'm learning a lot about my friends' cities. You've inspired me: we have an outdoor flower show in the southern spring and I have never even thought to take my camera there! Next time...

JanetLippincott I'm so envious that you got in ahead of time! I'd love to see how it all fits together. When will you be going?

photopoet It looks like it will fantastic. Boston also has an indoor show—but not this huge. I do hope you take lots of photos when the show opens.
