Bonaire - LAND (for DancingDolphin)

2008.03.30
This is the resort I stay at in Bonaire, called Captain Don's Habitat. It's named after the resort founder, Captain Don Stewart, who was an early pioneer of scuba diving in Bonaire. He was also one of the people instrumental in getting the entire perimeter of the island declared a marine sanctuary. This is the entrance into the lobby, showing the old pirate skull logo.

A view of Rum Runner's, the open air restaurant at Captain Don's looking over the Caribbean.

A sunset photo taken while dining at the restaurant above. The boat in the foreground is one of the resort's dive boats.

The boat dock at Captain Don's. The sink like things in the lower left corner are rinse tanks for dive gear.

One of the friendly (reasonably!) natives perched on the edge of land by the restaurant, surveying the Caribbean and mooching lettuce from the tourists!

The ground floor condo just inside that wall is where I stay when I'm in Bonaire.

The diver's dock. This dock is to the right of the boat dock pictured above, and is used by divers and snorkelers for easy entry into and out of the water.

Another friendly native, enjoying the day.

Close up of above native. You'd look that happy too if you lived in Bonaire!

One of several decent beers you can't get in the USA. This one is similar to Corona, and in fact is also often served with a lime. The advantages of vacationing in the Caribbean, the beer is better than here in the USA!

A view of the Harbor in Kralendijk, the main town in Bonaire.

This is Harborside, a building of small shops that spans the distance between the main shopping street in Kralendijk and the road along the Harbor.

Logo of one of my favorite harbor view restaurants.

Another colorful native! I have to give my good friend Janelle credit for this photo.

Another photo taken by my friend Janelle, this is one of the colorful buildings on the main shopping street in Kralendijk.

A view of City Cafe, where you can relax with a burger and a beverage of your choice and watch the world go by.

A view looking back up the one-way main shopping street in Kralendijk. Another photograph by Janelle.

Cultimara, the island's "supermarket" or grocery store. We shop here for breakfast and snack foods, and of course beer. Very different from US grocery stores, but that's part of the charm of a Caribbean island! Another photograph by Janelle.

Dinner at Patagonia, one of my favorite restaurants overlooking the Harbor. It's a brazilian steak house, and is yummy!

View from my table at Patagonia, complete with pelican perched on one of the boats.

DancingDolphin asked a good question, what does Bonaire look like on land? Since this was a travel day, and I am quite certain there is nothing remotely photogenic in the mountain of dirty laundry and dive gear I brought home, I thought I would take the opportunity to answer that question. And to show you all that I do more on vacation than just scuba dive! ;)

I will post some more photos of the island in tomorrow's entry.

DancingDolphin Seems pb still has a little problem... only about 1/2 the shots came up but THANK YOU for showing these, Liz! I'll be back to see the rest, and I'll definitely be showing JR... a visit may be called for! It looks like a pristine place... not many tourists? Good snorkeling as well??
