Nature's Way....

2008.05.02
So, I was on my way to lunch, driving along a residential street, and I saw this very large bird on the sidewalk.

It was much much much bigger than the crow it was chasing away (who flew away so fast I couldn't even get a photo!).

Paying no attention to me, it strolled out to the street....

I totally do NOT recommend enlarging! Just be glad I didn't post the pic of him enjoying his lunch....

Sorry, I know this is totally gross, but I was so astounded to see a real live HUGE vulture strolling a street in an ordinary residential neighborhood that I just had to stop and take some photos. I assumed at first that it was a turkey vulture, but based on some quick research (thanks google and wikipedia!), it appears to be a black vulture. They're native to the southeastern US, so Pennsylvania seems a bit far north, but I guess no one told this guy. ;)

LostAspen Cool! I love vultures. They're great birds. Plus, who else do you know that would clean up all the road kill?

dadlak Great set...I got a picture recently of a bird eating some leftover fried chicken...not quite so grisly as this set...or so arresting. LostAspen makes a great point about vultures. I saw a group working some roadkill along I-10 and thought "that's who cleans up!"
