Outer Banks Lighthouses - Ocracoke Lighthouse

Yesterday's post was a Sound Lighthouse, today's is a Harbor Lighthouse. Harbor lighthouses serve to guide ships into a body of water where they can anchor safely. This one is located on Ocracoke Island, and is still in use today. Owned by the Coast Guard, it is in need of restoration and not open for climbing. The lighthouse is 76 feet tall, making it taller than a sound lighthouse, but much shorter than a coastal lighthouse. Made of brick, its diameter narrows from 25 feet at the base to 12 feet at its peak. The walls are solid brick, 12 feet thick at the bottom tapering to two feet thick at the top.

The Ocracoke lighthouse is the 2nd oldest operating lighthouse in the nation. There's a small cemetery behind the lighthouse, supposedly the old lighthouse keeper's cemetery. It's fenced off, and the stones appear to face away from the lighthouse, so I couldn't tell who was buried there. Unfortunately, it was extremely overgrown.
