At The Cross

2007.09.24
1. “Old age is - a lot of crossed off names in an address book” Ronald Blythe

2. “That's how the light gets in.”

3. “Good news from heaven the angels bring, Glad tidings to the earth they sing: To us this day a child is given, To crown us with the joy of heaven.” Martin Luther (German Priest and Scholar whose questioning of certain church practices led to the Protestant Reformation. 1483-1546)

4. “Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dream.” Paulo Coelho (One of Brazil's most successful novelists)

5. “I will not wear a crown of gold where my Savior wore one of thorns”
Godfrey of Bouillon

6. “And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; / (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Bible

7. “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name (John 20:31).”

8. “I never saw a contradiction between the ideas that sustain me and the ideas of that symbol, of that extraordinary figure [Jesus Christ].”
Fidel Castro

9. “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

10. “Death comes to all. But great achievements build a monument.”

11. “Love is patient; love is kind
and envies no one.
Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude;
never selfish, not quick to take offense.
There is nothing love cannot face;
there is no limit to its faith,
its hope, and endurance.
In a word, there are three things
that last forever: faith, hope, and love;
but the greatest of them all is love.”

12. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.”
Bible

13. Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid...for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

14. “Give, and it shall be given to you. For whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt to you in return.”

15. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. (Psalms 30:5)”

16. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”
Mark 9:23

17. “And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. (Revelations 8:3)”

Religions of the world: Christianity

Today I begin a new series of postings on some of the great religions of the world.

I begin with Christianity as that was my own beginning. I have since explored many eastern and western traditions of religion as well as non-religious alternatives.

Many adherents from all the world's great religions seem to feel a loss of spirituality and a surfeit of religiosity. Some say we are at the very beginning of a new shift in human consciousness - one that will alter the direction of human evolution forever. I shall explore that also in future blog entries.

Plurality, tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect should be the hallmarks of civilised people everywhere and while all religions seem to profess these noble aims most falter in their practice somewhere in their domains.
