Fragments of Memories
The other day I saw a pattern folder in a charity shop and it reminded me of my mother in the late 1940's who used to order clothes patterns from America by Mail Order. When they arrived she, my sisters and I, and often our friends, used to cut out the paper designs and then pin them to material. She would then cut along the pinned outlines, after which she would sew them together to produce the latest fashions. She was a part -time model and oftern modelled her own dresses, the first time they appeared in the town. She was the first person to wear patterned silk stockings and it caused quite a stir in the town.
Who today would know how to make their own clothes?
What I also remember is the forties music which my mother played on a wind up phonograph using 78 inch bakelite platters. The needles used to have to be replaced regularly and one bought them in small metal boxes a hundred at a time.
One of the great delights of my childhood which was completely free of television, cd-players, dvd recorders, tape recorders, mobile phones, ipods, walkmans, etc. was the CINEMA.
How well I remember popcorn and coca-cola, sitting in the front row, and watching the great stars like sultry Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake, husky Lauren Bacall, Lana Turner, And Betty Grable. I remember seeing Judy Garland in Meet me in St. Louis and also being banned from seeing The Green Mountain, why I never knew and do not to this day.
The three videos below give a small flavour of the fashions my mother wore, the music she played, and the films we watched.
