20. Death throes of my trusty old workhorse 2.1 Mb camera that served me so well these last four years. It was used to take all these pictures. May it rest in peace. AMEN.

Red Hot Pokers

These beautiful plants belong to the genus Kniphofia, family Liliaceae. The are native to Arabia (1sp.), Madagasgar (1 sp.) and tropical and southern Africa (65 sp.).

Many species are highly decorative, in particular K. uvaria, with its flame-coloured spike of flowers. Red Hot Pokers bring a flash of colour to any border and are much prized perennials. There are more colour forms than most people imagine and I have posted a number of cultivars and species.Numerous hybrids and cultivars are available commercially.

The flowers are visited by sunbirds in the wild.
