Snake! (Hiking V)

2011.05.31

We (my brother was hiking with me) turned a corner and discovered this.

At first he just curled up and gave us a stink eye.

Testing the air to see if we'd make a good snack or not.

Eventually he got fed up with us and started lunging at us. My brother is standing just off camera to the right.

Finally, here he is mid strike. We decided we messed with him long enough at this point and it was time to move on.

This is the last of my Patapsco hiking trip. We ran into this little guy while walking through the woods. Even though it was good 85F outside, under the trees it was on the cool side and this snake was warming himself in the sun shine. Garter snakes (also called gardner snakes) are common throughout the US. They eat pretty much anything smaller then they are and are the only snake that lives in Alaska. Contrary to popular belief they do have venom glands and produces a very mild venom - they just lack the fangs to inject it when they bite.

ArtBee You got some great shots of that snake......must have really "ticked him off" usually they just hide. I like the shot of the tongue especially. Very Nicely Done!
