Chincoteague Oyster Festival

2011.10.13
pixel
The stars of the show - beer and raw oysters. Chincoteague oysters are my hands down favorites. They're super salty and delicious.

The festival is one of the major fundraising events for the local firefighters. Twenty seven hundred people went this year - sold out event - at $45/ticket for a grand total of $121500. Quite a bit of money when you consider the island is 5 miles long and 3 wide.

The only thing that sucks about the event is the lines. They're long. Thankfully if you just give it an hour they clear out pretty quickly. By the third hour, there's usually no wait at all.

Here are the shuckers in action. There will be a huge pile of oyster shells behind them by the end of the day.

Everyone sated for the day.

Though not everyone is happy about having their picture taken (and yes that's the girl in red).

In case it hasn't been clear yet, I did indeed go away to the beach over the weekend. Its my annual trip to Chincoteague Island for the Oyster Festival. It's a 4 hour, all you can eat smorgasbord of oysters and miscellaneous seafood. It's fantastic and one of my favorite festivals of the year.

marilynx The girl in red is so beautiful... her naturalness enhanced without "the smile".
Glad you enjoyed your weekend.
