Beach Road, Aleppey to Kochi
2008.02.01
Is this the beginning of a new fashion for swimmers. It wouldn't surprise me if I started seeing men in little sheer towels walking around our beaches as I think something of mens fashion in the 90s was originally an Indian style. You know the shirt hanging out over the trousers, designed to be worn that way, not just a question of attitude.

Fifty-five kilometres of Indian suburbia. It's developed all the way and there is plenty to explore if you have the time. There are fishing villages and a few resorts, one or two homestays and many homes built by expat Indians from Dubai. For all that, this stretch retains a quiet village atmosphere but with cars, shops, churches and schools aplenty enough. The alternative is the highway, which, from what I saw of it, offers no consolations.
It's a shame about the need for the rock walls but erosion is a serious problem here. The rock walls, wherever they are cut the houses beach front right off, sea breeze and all. Still, there's plenty of sand. The sea bed drops off quickly not far from the shore and swimming is not idyllic with the ever present threat of dangerous rips. If you love the beach or hanker for a cheap holiday on it to escape a cold country, you are best to find somewhere else - like Thailand or for more money, a Pacific Island, the Maldives or Australia.
