Me on a bridge in front of a church. No, that's not snow on the railing, though it was cold enough to put frost on many of the plants. It appeared to be flour, but couldn't swear to it. Like my ensemble? I had lost my scarf the day before, so I was using my wee travel blanket instead. Goes quite nicely with the gloves and hat, eh? ;)

It's a street. No, really. In Venice, that's a street. Most are a bit wider, and a couple are a bit narrower, but it's a street I tells ya!

It's not a canal, I say! It's a "rio!" ...either way it's sooo pretty. The water there reminded me of some of the rivers in Washington that have glacial runoff. So very, very lovely.

Modern art glass Christmas tree. Not a spectacular shot; included more for contrasting the night shots of it while lit (the tree, that is, not me) that I got the next day.

500 year old clocks, repaired once 2 or 300 years ago. It was displaying the correct time when were there, though the numbers of the upper clock are obscured from this angle. Roman numerals on the left, Arabic numbers on the right, 24 hour/zodiac clock below. The Arabic numbers are the first "digital" clock in the world and they change every 5 minutes. Two automatons, of sorts, comes out to hit the bell (waaay up at the top) with hammers on the hour.

Above the entry to St. Mark's Basilica. The art (I cannot recall if they are mosaics) details the theft -- also termed "rescue" -- of St. Mark's bones from Alexandria and bringing them to Venice.

On this panel, the thieves go through customs in Alexandria, fooling the inspectors by putting pork at the top of the basket. They believed the pig product would be offensive to the Muslim inspectors and apparently they were correct! The picture depicts one inspector holding his nose and others turning away in disgust, too offended to look closely. (On a related note, a friend once told me a friend of his smuggled some food product or other out of Argentina by putting a picture of Evita on the top of his belongings in his luggage. The inspectors crossed themselves and waved him through, lol.)

Handmade glass chandolier at Dogi's Murano Art. The starting price for the simplest one was in the 4,000 euro range. Here is a video of one of the master artisans.

Figurines on display. This picture is one for the blooper reel, as you can see my hand and camera in the lower left. Not quite as yuk-worthy as a stormtrooper hitting his head ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBQaLuqwtl8 ), but still makes me snorfle a bit.

The colors are beautiful and, yes, that's real gold plating, but... I guess I've been assaulted by too many knockoffs over the years. It seems a bit garish. Or maybe I'm just not stylish enough to be among Venice's posh, glass buying elite. Pooh.

Me, back on the Rialto bridge with my new scarf and silly hat. The other hat was squeezing a bit much for a weary traveler's aching head. This is mostly a, "hey, look! I'm really here, I swear!" kind of picture. ;)

My first trip to Venice. Not enough time, too many people, so much beauty! Architecture, canals ("rios"), glass blowing, boats... Must go back for a photo-centric trip!
