Bordeaux 2 - Saint-Émilion

2008.04.12
Me at the Eiffel bridge. :D

View from the door. I will have to go back here one day with the Canon. A day when there are no boxes by the door!

Steep cobblestone streets. So cool!

I really like this picture. Spring sunshine, beautiful street, France, restaurant... Ah! Lovely!

Armelle and her parents. :)

With a few filters and some spooky music, this would be great for the opening of a Halloween TV special.

I know, I know, that tower again... This time, though, the idea is to give you a sense of placement for the arch. There is a closer picture below...

Look up close. There are little people all along the arch! Armelle was the one who noticed this, I think. Neat, huh?

If I recall correctly, there are tours that go into the lower part of the church. Wikipedia mentions that there is a monolithic (carved out of limestone) church here. I think the tour may have been of that, as we later went into an above-ground church with no guides or fees. I am curious about the tour, however. But can't do everything in one trip, you see, or there's no reason to go back!

La Porte de la Cadene. I don't remember what Amelle's mom told me about it, but I think it was the gate to the town at one point. La Maison de la Cadene is the building on the right.

Well, here! Read for yourself. :D

This is the maison in question. While some of the wood has been replaced, an awful lot of it appears to be original. Gosh!

Big, church-lookin' wall. There is some mention of it at the official town website, but most of what I found while quickly browsing seemed to be focusing on the preservation efforts of UNESCO and such, rather than talking about the history. Feel free to take a peek, though! http://www.saint-emilion.org/

Armelle told me this was a monument dedicated to "France's children," the soldiers, who had been killed in WWI.

The light in the church was interesting shades of green, accentuated by lavender, due to the stained glass. It was very Matrix-y at times! Was expecting Agent Smith to pop out at any moment.

There was art of many different ages and styles of art here. I really need to find a good guide book for next time. It's pretty amazing, though, that it's still a working church and all this stuff is out in the open for everyone to come see. Fabulous!

The color correction from my point-and-shoot is often arbitrary and sometimes causes issues. In this case, however, it actually took out a lot of the green. Sweet!

A view of the rooftops of Saint-Émilion. :)

Car photo of vineyards as we zoomed by. Being a wine newbie, the names mentioned did not ring any bells. Apparently these are some of the most well regarded and valuable vineyards in the world. High end, even for Bordeaux. Ooo, aaahhh!

On Day 2, we went with Armelle's parents up to Saint-Émilion. Along the way we crossed a bridge designed by the famous Monsieur Gustave Eiffel, of Eiffel Tower fame. It's not quite as flashy as the tower, but sturdy and reflective of his style. I'm pretty sure we were crossing the Dordogne River at the time, but I can't swear to it.

We walked around the town a bit, doing some shopping, and ducking under awnings when the spring sky opened up for the occasional dousing. We had umbrellas, but ducking under awnings is more fun! I bought a nice leather wallet that gets lots of comments, as it says, "I'm very very very very RICH! and so... beautiful." It's adorable!

We had lunch at a lovely restaurant where we had the local specialty, lamproie. It's baked fish, served in sauce (wine sauce?) inside little clay bowls with covers. I was told that it's good I didn't know what the fish looked like before eating it, as it is pretty horrifying. Apparently it's a sucker-type fish, of the lamprey variety. Hence the name. I looked up the fish many months later and was, indeed, glad that I had not seen the head. As Armelle says, "oh yeah looks like a shower head but more nasty." HAHAHAHAHA!

Actually, here's the conversation we had back in August about it, posted to a blog titled, "Sacrebleu, what is this?":

Armelle mentioned that she paid another visit to St Emilion today. I asked if she'd eaten more of the Scary Baked Fish.

SistaWeotch says: Did you have Scary Baked Fish?

Armelle says: huh????

SistaWeotch says: That fish we ate at the restaurant. So good, but a scary looking blood sucker fish, I seem to recall.

Armelle says: aaaaahh Lamproie
Armelle says: yeah you don't want to see his head if you're going to eat him

SistaWeotch says: OMG! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Lamproie&btnG=Search
