Above the clouds.

2008.08.24
"Hey, look! Behind you!"
"What?"
"Naples!"

One of the many shots from the day where people make the picture.

Zoomed in explanation. Dad with 2 wee girls. :)

Last stop before the crater rim. Including the parking and biglietti (tickets) area, this is stand number 2 out of 4. The other 2 are around the edge of the crater. This is the one where you can stop and get a guide to come tell you about the history and geology of Vesuvius. The service is included in your ticket price. Of course, if you are pleased with your guide, tips are most welcome. ;)

Escapee.

This is one of my favorite shots of the day. Again with the people making it happen.

It never occurs to me to be remotely nervous while I'm up here. I wonder if I'd feel differently without the ropes.

Clouds rolling in. The one on the left was big and dark and coming in fast. It was fabulous!

Cloud blowing up and over the path into the crater. It reminded me a bit of driving over the Golden Gate when the fog comes pouring down the hills of Marin like milk. Not so thick here, but still sweetly familiar.

This is very Bonanza-ish for some reason. Needs more cowboys. Or maybe it's Lassie that's missing.
"Quick, Lassie! Get help! Timmy's fallen into a volcano!"
"Arf! Arf!"

I wish I'd realized how great the people were when I took the photo. I was just waiting for them to leave in the hopes that I could get Ischia in the background, unobstructed. If only I'd known I would have framed this a little differently. As it is, still one of my favorite pictures of the day.

[Hint: mouseover.]

Magical Ischia. I didn't tweak these colors at all. It really looked just like this. Amazing!

It's like Avalon.

This stone is of a different composition than the lava around the rim. It was from the throat of the volcano and is, therefore, harder and more dense.

Another people shot. :)

I think I was facing Ischia and Procida this time. The clouds were just so amazing and beautiful -- and so accommodating! They kept providing the most incredible framing.

Bay of Naples.

Wow, another favorite of the day. Just wow.

I'm so thankful I got to experience this today. How amazing and gorgeous. What a wonderful life!

My weekly trek to Vesuvius. This time I brought the new camera again. Still have lots to learn with it. Glad I'm getting a chance to break it in while I'm still in friendly territory. Would hate to miss a cheetah in action on the Serengeti!

I discovered that I really like overlapping planes and playing with the 1/3 rule of proportion. Sometimes it turns out really balanced, sometimes it's ok and looks like it's just waiting for text to be inserted somewhere. Maybe I should make brochures and advertisement photos to supplement my income. ;)

Another thing I discovered is that I usually consider people to be a distraction from the landscape and nature photos I prefer. There are a few shots, however, that made me wish I'd taken more pictures with the people in them. If only I'd taken more pics with the peeps I could have gotten better framing and context. Sometimes people really add to the scene and draw you in. Who knew?

ps: I need to learn something about filters and ISO settings, I'm thinkin'. I do love me some sun and cloud shots!
