Serengeti Day 2 (Part 1)

2009.01.04
"Harold! Slow down!"
"You always tell me to slow down, Ingrid. Why don't you and 'loverboy' there just hurry up? I've got a meeting to get to."
"'Loverboy'? And just what is that supposed to mean?"

Y halo thar!

"Wow, this dirt is GREAT!"

"Ohhh yeah! This is just what I was looking for. Hard morning of elephanting around... a dirt spa is perfect!"

"Wonder how it tastes..."

NOM NOM NOM!

"Umm... I suggest you stick with the grass for yer noms."

"Pfft! Stoopit dirt!"

(Didja notice that it's a one-tusked olifant?)

Bebe giraffes!

[Hint: mouseover.]

Monitor lizard, monitoring the... um, water level?

Long-crested Eagle.

"Bleh! Waiter! This water tastes like hippo dung!"

"I demand a fresh pool!"

Oh, the humanity! Err... hippopotamy?

[Hint: mouseover.]

Wide shot of the hippo pool.

Sean and Dario. :)

Guardian hippo keeps an eye on a young croc.

[Hint: mouseover.]

"Yeah? Well *I* had garlic for lunch! How do you like DEM APPLES?"
"Oh, god, make it stop!"

I think this is Ruppell's Long-tailed Starling. Very pretty!

Mature croc who has seen a few battles. This was at the edge of a small hippo pool and s/he was hanging out with a juvenile croc.

[Hint: mouseover.]

We were not in a good spot to get the pictures for this, as the baby hippo carcass drifted behind a bush before we could get too many action shots. Sorry for the soft focus.

The younger of the two crocs (similar in coloration to the croc at the previous hippo pool) went to chew on it a bit, but soon lost interest.

[Hint: mouseover.]

The hippos let us know that the young croc was on the move, getting agitated and making a lot of noise. We had lost track of its location, but Fabian soon pointed it out for us.

[Hint: mouseover.]

Fittingly, just around the bend there were vultures waiting to be called in for cleanup duty.

Wrong country, I know, but this put me in mind of That's What Friends Are For from The Jungle Book. ;)

Stackable baboons!

Bebe!

Baboons in trees.

Day 2 on the Serengeti. The date was actually 3 Jan. 2009. All of this was before lunch. There is NO WAY this was going to fit on one page! There is more before-lunch action on the way, even. ;)
