Minton Tiles

Some 30,000 handcrafted Minton tiles decorate the floor of St. George's Hall in Liverpool.

Covering 140ft by 70ft the mosaic floor was laid in 1852 at a cost of £30,000.

The geometric designs consist of circles .........
|
....... the largest of which, at 40ft in diameter, depicts the Royal Arms surrounded by a laurel wreath and stars of 16 points.
|
Since the 1860's the tiles have been protected with a raised wooden floor and unveilings are rare.
