It looks like a way bigger dog could handle maybe his own food (not canned) a bottle of water and a foldaway bowl for maybe a half day hike or possibly a full day with it being taken off several times during the day while hiking. Make sure you have enough room in your backpack to carry his "stuff" just in case.

Our Golden Retriever years ago had his own pack, much smaller on him than the one pictured, and he carried his own food on backpacking trips.

I had a friend that had one of those but it was only used for the dog to carry his belongings like water and food and a blanket, but to carry the owners stuff I hope not
