Telephoto vs Wide Angle

2009.12.07

Both shots: f5.6, 1/100 sec., ISO-100

One of the things I learned on my photography course this week was when to use a telephoto lens as opposed to a wide angle .... and vice versa.

Straightforward you might think but look at these two photos: the one on the left is taken with the lens zoomed in and gets rid of the sky and much of the building, the one on the right was taken a few feet back with the lens opened to a wider angle, thus enabling me to get the building and some of the foreground in the shot as well.

Did you notice that although different lenses were used from almost the same spot the actual size of the statue is the same in each photo ?!

Both shots used the same aperture, shutter speed, and ISO rating. Just shows how different shots can be depending on nothing more than how wide you open your lens up.
